Position: Undergraduate Advisor - Programs & Transfer (Contract)

Department: Faculty of Arts & Faculty of Science

Salary: $54,091 - $69,708 + 4% in lieu of vacation

Under the direction of the Dean of Arts and Dean of Science, the Undergraduate Advisor - Programs & Transfer carries out an annual cycle of functions to support students in planning and managing their degree programs in the Faculties of Arts and Science.

Responsibilities

Duties as the Undergraduate Advisor - Programs & Transfer include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with the Registrar's office to evaluate transfer credit applications from students from other institutions or faculties at SMU.
  • Assessing incoming transcripts for advanced standing in Undergraduate and Certificate programs and notifying the Registrar's office.
  • Evaluating international transcripts, consulting with appropriate individuals from other countries while recommending acceptance, rejection and/or upgrade requirements.
  • Assessing student records for purposes of placement in, progressing through and graduating from a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts programs.
  • Providing academic counselling to Arts and Science Faculty students and assisting students with course selections to ensure they meet program requirements.
  • On behalf of the Deans, writing to students and the University community to provide information on matters concerning Arts and Science students.
  • In consultation with the Associate Deans and other Advisors in Arts and Science, providing advice to incoming cohorts of international students (including students from BNUZ, Zhuhai) and ongoing support during the course of their degree.
  • Providing recommendations to the Deans concerning probation status, failures, and other matters affecting students.
  • Acting as the administrative point of contact for students in Arts or Science programs who have academic or personal problems. Responding to wide ranging student inquiries and facilitating referrals to appropriate University offices where necessary.
  • Working under the authority of the Deans, liaising with the Registrar's Office, the Admissions Office, the Recruitment Office and other offices, and/or individuals responsible for providing student support.
  • Assisting in developing and delivering information sessions to potential part-time applicants both on and off campus.
  • Informing faculty and students of awards and scholarships available.
  • Approving graduation checks, late registrations and closed course forms, and other similar documents.
  • Compiling data and preparing reports relating to enrolment trends.
  • Under the guidance of the Deans and/or Associate Deans, providing training for, and overseeing the work of student tutors and mentors.
  • Working closely with other Advisors in Arts and Science, and the Science Outreach team, organizing special initiatives as required (e.g. Arts & Science Dean's List receptions, Programs Days, Welcome Week events, and special events for international and transfer students).

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Undergraduate Advisor - Programs & Transfer you will possess an Undergraduate degree with three (3) to five (5) years of related professional experience. You will demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, professional judgment and discretion and strong analytical skills. Experience working with international students and/or demonstrated understanding of intercultural environments will be considered assets. This position may require the successful candidate to travel internationally and the candidate must hold a valid passport for international travel (or be able to obtain such passport).
