Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth 811, Mental Health and Addictions for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health. 

EMC delivers a high-quality pre-hospital care program and Telehealth service to Nova Scotians each and every day. We achieve this through the more than 1,400 employees who work with us including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communication officers and support staff.

Reporting to the Regional Support Supervisor, the Transport Operator is responsible for the safe operation of EHS vehicles and those clients requiring, and eligible for, transport utilizing these resources for medical related services within EHS. This is a non-clinical position however, will be responsible for providing first aid services should the situation arise. Operators must constantly monitor their passengers and other drivers, and exercise a great deal of tact, diplomacy and customer service. Operators may deal with heavy traffic and congested streets. Operators must be alert and manage their personal well-being as they can drive for long periods of time, operate during peak periods and must cope with adverse weather, construction and traffic conditions.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Safe and prudent operation of EHS vehicles.

• Support and assistance for clients/patients while placing in or removing from the vehicle.

• Safely support a Paramedic moving patients either from bed to stretcher/wheel chair or while moving on stretcher or wheel chair.

• Provide assistance to passengers/patients as requested.

• Interact professionally at all times with EMC and EHS stakeholders.

• Operate all system and company vehicles in accordance with Nova Scotia laws as well as all applicable Policies and Procedures and Safe Work Practices of EMC and EHS.

• Completes all work-related documentation required by management within required time frames.

• Maintains on-going cleanliness of vehicle, station, and/or premises during scheduled shift.

• Practices good hygiene and demonstrates socially accepted customer service skills when interacting with clients, family members, other emergency services, colleagues and with the general public.

• Displays decision-making capability and takes initiative as needed.

• Operation of communications equipment and interaction with Medical Communication Centre, as needed

• Use personal protective equipment provided as required and trained.

• Check and visually inspect vehicle daily and for pre-trip awareness.

• Operate vehicle and practice defensive driving techniques while following traffic laws at all times.

• Assess and monitor vehicle operating conditions, and report issues.

• Ensure passenger/patient safety and comfort.

• Maintain a high degree of discretion and confidentiality as transport of any client using this service falls within our Privacy mandate.

What you'll need

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

· Minimum of four (4) years' related experience.

· A valid Nova Scotia class 4 driver's license with a safe driving record required. Additional courses centering around driver education an asset.

· Current First Aid qualification including AED or willing to complete training prior to start.

· Driving experience in a similar environment is an asset

· Experience transporting clients, larger vehicles preferred

- MFR training an asset

· Excellent customer service and communication skills.

· Ability to conduct yourself in safe and prudent manner at all times.

· Use good judgement, decision making, and problem solving when managing daily developments.

· Strong interpersonal skills to build good working relationships with internal and external partners to achieve common goals

· Have a positive attitude, excellent time management, task planning and prioritization skills

· Ability to handle confidentiality and sensitive issues with tact and discretion

· Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others to achieve company goals
