What you'll do

Responsibilities

You will provide career, academic and personal counselling, as well as guidance and support for all students of the Annapolis Valley Campus. You will create resources and deliver and/or coordinate group sessions and workshops on a wide range of wellness and personal management topics, to aid students in adjusting to college life and independent living. In addition to providing counselling to students, you will provide leadership and support regarding critical incidents involving the entire campus community.

You will provide consultation services, as requested by faculty & staff. You will participate in case conferences as a member of an integrated care delivery team. You will participate in evaluation and research activities as required. You will liaise with community services/agencies to coordinate referrals and collaborate on specific activities.

You will provide counselling services specific to the Adult Learning Program, leading to the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults. You will engage in student intake assessment, encompassing literacy, numeracy and psychosocial needs. The ALPC is also responsible for creating and maintaining comprehensive student files, data management, orientation and retention support services as you collaborate with both the School of Access and Student Services departmental teams. The ALPC also works closely with external government and non-government agencies to support ALP students.

You will report directly to a manager who is responsible for provision of Student Services and Academic leadership in the school of Health and Human Services and the school of Access.

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is a master degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Divinity and Pastoral Counselling, Sociology/Humanities Counselling or Counselling Psychology. You are a Canadian Certified Counsellor or Registered Counselling Therapist, Registered Social Worker (or equivalent).
  • You have a minimum of 5 years of recent and related occupational experience in counselling adults from diverse populations in areas such as mental health, educational/academic advising, life-skills coaching or personal counselling, or related.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail, and Student Records Management Software.
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience.
  • You have experience in training/facilitation preparation, delivery and evaluation.
  • It is an asset if you have experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students in a post-secondary environment.

As a condition of employment, Professional Support employees at NSCC must complete a two-year (part-time) adult education program delivered by NSCC. This adult education program is a significant investment on the part of NSCC in the learning and development of new employees. To achieve regular status; all probationary, full or part-time Professional Support employees of the College must successfully complete the program within their probationary period. Term full-time Professional Support employees whose term appointment is twelve or more months are also required to participate in this program.
