Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director, Integrated Communications, the Social Media Officer:

· Supported by leaders within the External Affairs team, develops and executes comprehensive social media strategies for Saint Mary's University, ensuring alignment with institutional goals, marketing objectives and brand standards.

· Creates, curates and schedules engaging content (including written posts, graphics, photos, videos and infographics) across the university's main social media platforms, including Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube, while adhering to platform-specific best practices.

· Identifies new and creative ways to engage audiences; monitors social media trends and adapts content to leverage current trends and discussions relevant to the university community.

· Manages and updates the social media content calendar, ensuring timely and consistent posting across platforms.

· Coordinates with internal stakeholders to gather and incorporate relevant content and key messages into the content plan.

· Monitors social media channels for engagement opportunities, trends and discussions relevant to the university community.

· Tracks and analyzes social media metrics and engagement data to measure the effectiveness of campaigns and content

· Responds to inquiries, comments and messages in a timely, professional and engaging manner.

· Works closely with the External Affairs team, the wider communications group, and university stakeholders to ensure that social media content supports the university's broader communication, marketing and institutional goals.

· Ensures consistency in the university's voice, tone and brand across all social media platforms.

· Monitors social media for potential risks or crises and works with the Manager, Media Relations & Issues Management, to develop appropriate responses.

· Responds to sensitive issues and escalates matters as needed to ensure that the university's reputation is managed effectively.

· Provides guidance and training on social media best practices to other university staff and departments.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful Social Media Officer you will have:

· Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field

· Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in social media management, digital marketing, or related communications roles, preferably in an educational or nonprofit setting

· Excellent writing, editing and storytelling skills with a keen eye for detail

· Proficiency in social media platforms, social media management tools and analytics platforms

· Ability to develop creative content that resonates with diverse audiences

· Strong understanding of digital marketing trends, audience engagement techniques, and social media advertising

· Proven experience with video production/editing, graphic design, and photography

· Passion for and expertise in current social media best practices, strategies and trends

· Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team

· Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver by the appropriate deadlines

· Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders

· Ability to handle and maintain confidential material

· Knowledge of university environments and higher education communications is an asset

· Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is an asset
