Faculty of Science - Biology Department
The Biology Department is a unit in the Faculty of Science at the Fredericton campus. There are 26 Faculty and 8 staff members all working out of the Loring Baily Hall Building. The role of the Department is to conduct original research, which includes projects on a diverse range of experimental organisms, and to provide high-quality educational opportunities for graduate (PhD, MSc) and undergraduate students.

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri | 8:15 am - 4:30 pm | 36.25 hours per week
Additional Working Conditions:
- Act as an "on-call" contact for the greenhouse, aquatic facility, research and teaching spaces, and other building facilities in the event of a problem.
Salary Range: $49,402 - $61,751 per annum
YOUR FOCUS
Reporting to the Chair of Biology, the Scientific Technician will work closely with the faculty, staff, other UNB employees, and external contractors to ensure the facilities and equipment are working to allow us to meet our needs.
- Monitor research, teaching, and common areas of Loring Bailey Hall under the control of the Department of Biology.
- Monitor the roof-top greenhouse, aquatic facility, the greenhouse linking Bailey Hall and the IUC, biohazard rooms, chemical storage rooms, controlled temperature rooms, cooling heating, chilled water, air handling, compressed air, and deionized water systems.
- Liaise with Facilities Management and other contacts as necessary to arrange repairs and general maintenance.
- Coordinate with external contractors and Faculty/staff to make arrangements for repairs/renovations.
- Conduct daily/weekly/monthly checks and routine maintenance to keep the building systems operational.
- Complete preventative maintenance, diagnostics/troubleshooting, repair of basic scientific equipment used for research and teaching, and arrange for calibration and certifications as required.
- Maintain freezers, refrigerators, ice machines, deonized water system, laminar flow hoods, centrifuges, small electronics, field equipment, liquid pipettes, among other pieces of equipment, and arrange for repair as required.
- Collaborate with Faculty and staff to provide advice on funding proposals for building renovations or equipment acquisition.
- Acquire quotes, take measurements, and provide general recommendations based on current uses of spaces.
- Participate on committees related to maintenance, use of space, safety and repair of equipment.
- Handle and dispose of hazardous goods and biohazard materials from teaching and research labs.
- Other duties as assigned.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Post Secondary Education in Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology or a related field.
- A minimum of five (5) years of experience in repair or maintenance of light equipment.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Additional Strengths
- Experience in facility management is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of and adherence to safety protocols when handling instruments is considered an asset.
- Experience working in potentially hazardous environments is considered an asset.
- Experience handling hazard and biohazard materials is considered an asset.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to efficiently manage repair schedules and prioritize tasks.
