STUDENT HEALTH CENTRE
The Student Health Centre (SHC) falls within the Health and Wellness Division of Student Services and offers a full range of family-practice-style medical services to full-time UNB and St. Thomas University students. The Heath Centre consists of three physicians, a nurse practitioner, a registered dietitian, a team lead nurse, three nurses two medical administrative assistants and Clinic Director. The Student Health Centre provides appointments for as many as 120 patients per day during the regular academic year and 60 patients per day in the summer. The SHC also provides support to the university and its members through preventative health education, community vaccination clinics (often in association with the Nursing Faculty), programming in alignment with the Department of Health and Public Health as directives are received, and a variety of other health & wellness endeavours.

YOUR FOCUS
Reporting to the Team Lead Nurse, the Registered Nurse is part of an inter-disciplinary team and provides the initial and ongoing assessment and evaluation of patients to identify appropriate nursing interventions in support of each appointment.
- Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary health team (including external partners such as Security, Student Services, Public Health, Extra Mural, etc.) to plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate nursing patient care in consultation with patients.
- Monitor, assess, address, document and report symptoms and changes in patients' conditions and response to interventions using sound judgment and critical thinking, prior to the practitioner appointment.
- Provide emotional support and chaperoning during MD/NP appointments.
- Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests as prescribed by practitioners to identify and assess patients; sort, review and distribute lab results to appropriate practitioners and arrange follow up as needed.
- Administer medications, treatments and procedures as prescribed by practitioners or according to established policies and protocols.
- Prepare patients for their appointment. Record patients' medical histories and symptoms and provide preparatory testing such as urinalysis, Glucose levels, blood pressure, etc.
- Perform phlebotomy, wound care, and ear syringing.
- Assist MD or NP during minor surgery and procedures.
- Provide counseling that assists patients in developing, improving and regaining skills, promoting health and recovering from illness and disability.
- Process samples, label specimens and ensure safe delivery to lab.
- Determine the need to seek emergency or alternate care for those who cannot obtain an appointment with the MD/NP.
- Plan, participate in and support the University's response to emerging health, public health and pandemic- related issues, including everything from vaccinations to tests, education and crisis response.
- Participate in the development and revision of standards of care, policies and procedures.
- Maintain nursing supplies inventory by checking stock and placing orders staying within budget
- Prepare and stock exam rooms and waiting room and decontaminate equipment and instruments in preparation for patient's examination.
- Contact patients with test results, follow up on their symptoms or rebook missed appointments.
- Contact other health care providers to obtain relevant health care information on students.
- Open and close clinic following protocols.
- Protect patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies, medication administration and storage procedures.
- Deliver immunization programs on campus and collaborate with nursing students to provide additional mobile clinics as determined with the Clinic Director.
- Maintain current knowledge on communicable diseases as per public health guidelines.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Registered Nurse certification is required.
- Minimum of five years' experience working within emergency, family practice or similar environments with student-age populations.
Additional Strengths
- Bachelor of Nursing is preferred.
- Knowledge of the university environment and student challenges would be an asset.
- Recognize the stress of university life may influence individual specific physical, psychological, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual needs.
- Experience working with the late adolescent/young adult populations and is cognizant of the unique issues and concerns that come with this stage.
- Mature, creative, resourceful, self-motivated and non-judgmental.
- Strong communications skills as well as computer literacy and typing skills, in particular working with electronic medical records and troubleshooting issues that may arise.
- Demonstrate reflective thinking, assessing alternatives and supporting change.
- Certification and skill in venipunctures.
- Active membership in good standing with the Nurses Association of New Brunswick.
- Current certification in BCLS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods.
