The Library at Mount Saint Vincent University invites applications for the position of Reference Assistant. Note that the title of this position is currently under review. 

Classification: NSGEU Level 7 (full-time, permanent)
Starting Salary: $44,414 per annum (Range: $44,414 to $53,032) 
Start Date: January 2, 2020 

What you'll do

Responsibilities

The Reference Assistant serves in a leadership role on the Library's Research Help and Instruction Teams. This involves various responsibilities, including the following core areas:

  • delivering research help services to students, faculty, and staff either face-to-face, online, or by phone;
  • coordinating the organization of the Research Help Team schedule;
  • developing and delivering customized instruction sessions on library research topics and systems;
  • creating instructional materials and online research guides; and
  • liaising with non-degree program areas (e.g. Learning Passport, International Education Centre).

The Reference Assistant is also engaged with the following activities:

  • participating in the development and maintenance of the Library's social media presence;
  • planning and promotion as part of the Engagement Team with special events and displays; and
  • supporting the Collections and Acquisitions Team with projects and daily operations.

What you'll need

Qualifications

A university degree and a minimum of one year of related work experience is required. Prior work experience in an academic library, particularly in the area of reference (research help) services, is preferred. A Library Technician Diploma will be considered an asset. Instruction is a primary responsibility of this position; experience and/or aptitude for instruction, either one-on-one or in a group setting, is essential. A commitment to outstanding customer service, as well as excellent inter-personal and communication skills, is also required. Candidates must have strong technology skills with previous experience using learning management systems (e.g. Moodle) considered an asset. Knowledge and/or comfort with engaging community, for example at special events or on social media platforms, is expected.
