Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth 811 and Mental Health and Addictions for Nova Scotia and TeleHealth 811 Prince Edward Island for the respective Departments of Health.

Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations delivers a high-quality prehospital care program to Nova Scotians. We achieve this through our 1,400+ employees who work with us, including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communications officers, and support employees. Additionally, EMC has comprehensive Health and Wellness and Safety teams which support EMC employees.

EMC is seeking a part-time Psychological Health & Safety (PH&S) Advisor/Consultant for up to four hours per week, for a one year contract with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Health Services, Risk Management and Compliance
Telehealth & LifeFlight Operations, the Psychological Health & Safety Advisor provides mental health expertise, support and education to the organization and in particular regarding the effective implementation of the Canadian psychological health and safety standards within EMC.

The Advisor will work with the EMC PH&S Steering Committee in the development, implementation and evaluation of a strategic framework to support employee PH&S. The Advisor will consult and collaborate with a range of stakeholders to produce long-lasting advice and direction on initiatives to strengthen PH&S principles and practices throughout EMC.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Advises organizational implementation of the National Standards of Canada for Psychological Health & Safety in the Workplace and Psychological Health & Safety in the Paramedic Service Organization.
  • Provides leadership, advice and support on the development of a comprehensive PH&S program and provides recommendations regarding PH&S principles and best practices.
  • Advises on the integration and sustainment of a psychological health and safety program
  • Builds strong working relationships across EMC and with external partners.
  • Supports the organization in assessing for psychological hazards and risks.
  • Provides guidance in the development and implementation of activities to address the risks identified to support psychological health and safety.
  • Reviews internal and external resources and tools to support resiliency. Makes recommendations to support approved initiatives, programs, education and training for employees and leaders.
  • Provides input on the development of new programs and educational initiatives.
  • Provides guidance for the systematic and sustainable creation of opportunities, building coalitions and connections and removing systemic barriers for employees to actualize ideas and leverage required support and resources from the organization.
  • Participates on and/or provides advice for the organization and any committees focused on staff health and wellbeing.
  • Works collaboratively with the organization to support research, implementation of evidence-based practices, planning and implementation of prevention activities, including, but not limited to educational support as part of the collaborative stepped care approach to workplace wellbeing.
  • Advises the organization on the development and implementation of strategies that focus on prevention/early intervention/self-efficacy.
  • Assists with the development of measurement indicators, data collection and analysis tools to assess effectiveness of the psychological health and safety program.

What you'll need

Qualifications

  • Graduate level degree in Social Work, Counselling Psychotherapy or Psychology.
  • Member of the relevant professional association and licensed by the applicable Nova Scotian regulatory body.
  • Minimum of five years' related experience, preferred with experience with health care providers and/or emergency services providers.
  • Knowledge of a trauma informed approach to service delivery.
  • Expertise and practical experience in workplace psychological health and safety program development and implementation.
  • Knowledge of the role and responsibilities of emergency medical services and emergency dispatch services employees and the associated job stressors and exposures a strong asset.
  • Experience in clinical practice involving first responders or PTSD a strong asset.

EMC falls under the Nova Scotia provincial protocol for mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination.
