The Opportunity
Do you thrive in fast-paced environments, solving complex research challenges to bring breakthrough technologies to market? Join Rayleigh Solar Tech as a Product Design Engineer, where you'll play a pivotal role in scaling the next generation of perovskite solar modules.
In this role, you'll employ strong electrical engineering fundamentals and solar knowledge to lead product design for a flexible solar system that disrupts current deployment models while acknowledging ground truths. Your will lead on the electrical balance of system design for a solar system that radically diverges from current deployment models.
Someone who wants to help shape a new class of flexible, fast-to-install solar systems that expand the reach of clean energy-affordably and efficiently, If this sounds like you, we would love to meet you.
What you'll do
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Electrical & system architecture: Own design of module interconnects, power distribution, junction placement, protection schemes, and DC/AC layouts for flexible PV products - crafted to minimize installation effort and reduce balance-of-system hardware.
- System-level modeling & interrogation: Evaluate how electrical design choices (stringing, MPPT mapping, conductor sizing, tilt, orientation) affect yield, cost, and deployability. Build models and trade studies to guide architecture decisions.
- Grounded innovation: Apply an understanding of c-Si deployment practices and EBOS (electrical balance-of-system) realities, while still pushing the boundaries of what's possible in flexible PV form-factors and radical product formats.
- Prototyping & validation: Build and test prototypes, collect data to validate energy/performance assumptions, and iterate quickly.
- Manufacturing integration: Collaborate closely with mechanical/process teams to translate electrical designs into scalable, manufacturable product and fieldable systems.
What you'll need
Qualifications
What You Bring
- BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- Experience with PV systems, including c-Si deployment models, string design, inverters/charge controllers, and BOS hardware.
- Ability to model array energy output using tilt/orientation vs. architecture (Python, Matlab, PVSyst, etc.).
- Strong system-level thinking, able to question assumptions and consider real-world installer, wiring, and EBOS realities.
- Creativity to merge those ground truths with radical innovation, designing something truly new without losing practicality.
- Hands-on mindset; comfortable prototyping, testing, and iterating in a fast-moving start-up.Top of FormBottom of Form
Core Competencies:
- Practical wizard: Someone who starts with "what if" and finishes with "it works"
- Hustle: Ability to work fast and smart; time management is key for a start-up
- Adaptable: Start-ups are dynamic; our people must be, too
- Curiosity: Excited to take their prior experiences and apply it to a solar product
- Execution: Commitment to delivering results and leading by example. This will include bringing clarity to complex tasks through methodical processes, mentorship, and documentation
- Effective: Proven ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams, including product design, technologist, and operations
