Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's

Emergency Health Services (EHS) division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth 811 Mental Health and Addictions for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health. 

EMC delivers a high-quality pre-hospital care program and Telehealth service to Nova Scotians each and every day. We achieve this through the more than 1,400 employees who work with us including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communication officers and support staff

EMC is seeking a Manager of Health and Wellness to provide leadership and direction for EMC's Health and Wellness department including occupational and workplace health and its programs and directly manages the Occupational and Disability Management team

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Working closely with EMC Leadership teams and the Safety Management team, the Manager, Health and Wellness will strive to ensure that all health standards are met in an effort to safeguard the health and wellbeing of all employees within EMC. The Manager will work to promote safe and healthy work practices, and ensure compliance with regulatory, legislative and community health requirements. This is achieved through policy, procedures and programs, as well as the ongoing monitoring and reporting of key performance indicators.

The Manager, Health and Wellness will develop and oversee all overall health and wellness programs and processes, including the internal quality system so that short and long-term disability claims, on-the-job injury claims, and absenteeism are all greatly reduced.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, the successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor level minimum (Masters an asset) in health professions, human resources, business, public administration or related field.
  • Minimum seven (7) years' experience in Occupational Health, healthcare management or related profession, ideally in leadership roles with a concentration in one or more of the following specialties preferred (Occupational Health, Health and Wellness area Management, Insurance/Disability Case Management).
  • Minimum of 5 years leadership experience including an excellent track record in people and performance management.
  • Clinical experience in chosen field (minimum of 5 years front-line service delivery) is an asset.
  • Previous Occupational Health experience considered a strong asset.
  • Holds an active license as a clinician or professional designation with the applicable provincial body considered an asset.
  • Experience in multi-union environment, interpretation of collective agreements, working with OH&S Committees and unions considered an asset.
  • Advanced certification related to occupational health and wellness or the willingness to obtain a related, appropriate designation is considered an asset.
  • Project management / change management experience, ideally related to process improvement of complex systems is considered an asset.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Solid understanding of Disability Management processes.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Human Rights, the Workers' Compensation Act and Regulations and other applicable legislation.
  • Knowledge of, and management experience in, developing and managing programs related to health, safety and wellness.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret statistical data, and monitor quality and performance indicators and benchmarks related to the workforce.
  • Strong judgement required to determine appropriate responses to occupational health issues and unanticipated crises (e.g. pandemics, emergencies, outbreaks).
  • Ability to influence and build engagement amongst peers and business leaders to support new strategies and effectively manage change.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
