Position: Manager, Graduate Program Student Success

Department: Sobey School of Business

Annual Salary: $61,346 - $79,051 (Group 6)

Under the direction of the Director, Graduate Program Student Support and Recruitment, the Manager is responsible for working with the Graduate Program Coordinators for the MBA, MBA (CPA stream), MTEI and MAE programs to ensure that once students are recruited and admitted that their experience is rewarding, they are engaged in their learning experience and that the academic requirements for graduation are met. The Manager will be the primary point of contact for all registered students seeking program information or advising. The Manager will also coordinate all programs' orientation and student events. The Manager maintains all graduate student records, publications, forms and files and maintains data bases and information systems on student progression (Banner). The Manager will be the director's designate on committees and matters related to graduate program students.

Responsibilities

Duties as the Manager, Graduate Program Student Success include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in the development of long and short-term strategies for the programs with Program Councils and Program Coordinators.
  • Works with the Director and Coordinators to develop annual budget and monitors program budgets on a monthly basis.
  • Acting as primary contact for graduate students and advising graduate students on course selection, program options, graduation requirement and related issues.
  • Conducting regular surveys, town halls, etc. of students in consultation with Program Coordinators concerning program issues and compiling results.
  • Assisting Program Coordinators and Department Chairs with course scheduling and staffing of courses.
  • Making recommendations to Program Coordinators concerning students' probation status, failures, and low Quality Point Averages on a semester basis.
  • Responding to day-to-day issues for all programs as they arise and referring concerns to relevant parties for timely resolution.
  • Guiding students on matters related to University policy, Academic Regulations, processes and procedures.
  • Managing the scholarship, bursaries and awards process for graduate students, including making recommendations to faculty, Senior Development Officer and Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
  • Providing administrative counsel to admitted and current students.
  • Working with Program Coordinators to ensure administrative and academic issues and/or changes are addressed and submitted to the appropriate university body in a timely fashion.
  • Facilitating course exemption and transfer credit processes with Program Coordinators. Providing information concerning course registration, program requirement and academic appeals.
  • Facilitating planning sessions with Program Coordinators to develop social events and required non-academic event scheduling.
  • Overseeing and helping coordinate student events such as, the Bob Shaw Case Competition and the MTEI Durland Competition.
  • Advising all potential graduates of graduation requirements and approving graduation audit.
  • Composing annual mailing to returning students including a copy of the academic audit, or the process for a student to complete the audit, a letter providing information on any program changes and other non-academic information.
  • Managing relationships with internal groups, such as Student Societies and SMUSA, including liaising with internal groups to maintain relationships and improve process.
  • Negotiating contracts with providers of orientation events and other student services.
  • Facilitating positive relationships with faculty and staff within the Sobey School of Business.
  • Designing and implementing alumni contact strategy in concert with the Alumni Office.
  • Planning and facilitating alumni socials in a variety of cities across Canada in cooperation with the Alumni Office.
  • Composing regular communications to students and administrative departments concerning students' performance issues, advanced standing decisions, course withdrawal, and other academic issues.
  • Supporting the Director in liaising with Program Coordinators, FGSR, Enrolment Services to resolve problems/conflicts/complaints, restructuring the process as required.
  • Designing, developing and producing statistical reports for all aspects of graduate studies, scholarship funding, student enrolment, etc. for the Dean, Vice President Academic and Research and others, as requested.
  • Coordinating the submission of changes to the Academic Calendar for all Graduate programs' content and courses.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Manager, Graduate Program Student Success you will possess a Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA), Adult Education (Med) or Student Services (Med SS) with a minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience. You have the proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to participate in consultative decision making along with strong oral, written, presentation and facilitation skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
