About Our Opportunity

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker / Painter is responsible for carrying out material and equipment installations, renovations, repairs, and servicing in the following areas - carpentry, plumbing, heating, basic electrical, painting and ventilation on properties under the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair buildings and properties under the jurisdiction of Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency, including maintenance and repairs of walks, driveways, and parking areas.
• Install, maintain, and repair the following finished carpentry components: door jambs, doors, exterior fascia, soffits, railings and wood trim, counters, cupboards, shelving, windows, glass, and screening.
• Replace and repair asphalt and wood shingles, siding, building paper, gable, eave and roof vents, eaves trough, conductor pipe and flashing.
• Restore and install finishes such as drywall, including taping and filling, suspended ceilings, barker board, ceramic tile, flooring including tile, sheet-vinyl, stair nosings and rubber mats.
• Maintain and repair sanitary drainage and venting systems, domestic hot and cold-water systems, exhaust and air supply systems, heating systems components, domestic hot water heating systems and plumbing fixtures and trim.
• Prepare interior and exterior surfaces and apply paint, stain, varnish, and associated sealers.
• Prepare and complete documentation such as work orders, vehicle reports, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and inventory records.
• Repair vacant units to make them rent-ready.

What you'll need

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent, plus five years' experience in building and property maintenance or a related field. Must be able to perform basic tasks in carpentry, plumbing, heating, electrical, painting and drywall.
• Knowledge of residential building technology, basic knowledge of National Building Code and Occupational Health & Safety Act.
• Ability to operate electrical and mechanical tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of computer systems.
• Possess excellent organizational skills and ability to establish priorities.
• Detail oriented, accurate, and able to analyze data and trouble shoot as required.
• Ability to interact with the public and tenants in an appropriate manner on job sites.
• Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.

Assets

• Preference will be given to candidates who possess a minimum of five years' experience in painting.

Competencies required at this level of work are Detail Oriented, Communication skills, Teamwork, and Intercultural & Diversity Proficiency.

District offices manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia's housing stock. Their responsibilities include administering tenant applications and placements, collecting rent, resolving tenant issues, and maintaining and repairing properties.
