The Supervisor, Circulation is responsible for overseeing the operation of Library circulation and providing instruction in the use of the Library. The responsibilities of the incumbent include developing circulation policy and procedures in conjunction with other representatives of the NOVANET consortium, the University Librarian and other staff members; implementing overall policy and procedures related to circulation; and representing NSCAD in all matters related to circulation within the Nova Scotia university library community. The incumbent also ensures the implementation and application of adequate health and safety policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Deals with patron problems, disputes, and makes decisions related to Library circulation (e.g. replacement cost charges, exceptions to NOVANET criteria for issuing a library card, waiving fines or bills, permitting non-circulating material to be taken from the library, etc.).
  • Trains full time staff in circulation matters. Interviews, hires, trains, and supervises 6-10 student assistants in all matters related to Library Circulation and for special projects.
  • Covers the Circulation Desk in the case of short staffing. Is on call evenings and weekends in the event that problems arise.
  • Co-ordinates the establishment and operation of a Course Reserve Collection; processes all Reserve material as requested by Faculty, and advises Faculty on copyright guidelines related to reserve material.
  • Handles reference questions requiring the use of standard sources in any format.
  • Participates in giving Library orientation tours; assists patrons in locating Library material; instructs new users in the use of library resources in all formats.
  • Responsible for handling cash and credit/debit machine related to circulation, including daily deposits and reconciliations and entries into the Library ledger.
  • Recommends purchase of materials, equipment and supplies and relays requests for various titles and subject matter to University Librarian.
  • Keeps current with new technology and information related to the field (ongoing development).
  • Initiates or participates in special projects from time to time (e.g. production of training manuals, design of forms, development of a card control system, etc.).

Qualifications

A Library Technician's Diploma combined with three to four years of, administrative, or related experience or (an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. A Bachelor of Fine Arts or another related undergraduate degree would be an asset. Proficiency in use of the Microsoft Office Suite is required. The incumbent must have thorough knowledge of office procedures as well as experience in training and supervising others. Very good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively are essential and well developed organizational and time management skills are required. The incumbent must be capable of working in an environment with frequent interruptions. The incumbent must also be able to work in a shared office space.
