Under the supervision of the Director of NSCAD Library Services (University Librarian), the Library Technician is responsible for providing access to library materials including print, digital, archival and media formats. The technician catalogues print material, archival and media items and digital resources for discovery in the Library's catalogue and other collection management systems. Provides professional assistance to patrons in the use of library collections and facilities

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Performs metadata creation and editing for print, digital and media resource access, description, and management in Ex Libris' Alma
  • Participates in the planning and development of workflows for digitization, digital preservation and other metadata-dependent projects within the Library.
  • Maintains knowledge of the integrated library system and repository systems.
  • Maintains and updates authority records
  • Identifies need for re-cataloguing of published materials
  • Provides reference and instructional support to faculty, students and visiting researchers
  • Hires, trains, and supervises 1-2 student assistants
  • Reports and records withdrawals of print and digital items to the appropriate division of Novanet
  • Regularly analyses and evaluates cataloguing and metadata workflows; adapts standards and practices to localized needs.
  • Advises Library staff and others on current standards and practices and recommend changes when needed.
  • Represent the NSCAD Library on relevant Novanet groups and committees
  • Inventories and reports technical services supply needs
  • Maintains and analyses statistics to support collection development
  • Other duties as assigned

What you'll need

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree or Library technician diploma and 2 years related experience or (an equivalent combination of education and experience). Knowledge of RDA cataloguing rules and MARC coding. Knowledge of AACR 2 is an asset. Experience in describing analogue and digital resources using the MARC format is required. Knowledge of current metadata best practices, standards, methods, services, applications, data and file formats is required. Experience in an academic library setting is an asset.
