Position: Library Clerk III (NSGEU Local 79)

Department: Patrick Power Library

Annual Salary: $33,283 - $38,202 (Group 4)

Under the direct supervision of the Cataloguing/Metadata Services Librarian, the Library Clerk III provides support to the Cataloguing/Metadata Services department, the Collection Development Librarian and the University Archivist. This position organizes the processing of donated books and collection withdraws which may include database maintenance and online searching in addition to physical moving and packaging of materials. The position also performs data entry and quality control for the University's institutional repository, and acts as record-keeper for the Cataloguing/Metadata Services department by compiling records and maintaining electronic copies of several internal procedures manuals.

Responsibilities

As the Library Clerk III, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Organizing and processing donations and other uncatalogued books that lie outside the normal new book workflow.
  • Determining if donated and other uncatalogued books are currently owned by the library.
  • Organizing books by subject and passing those unique to the library onto collection liaisons for further inspection.
  • Receiving withdrawn materials and performing database maintenance to remove record of ownership.
  • Organizing and processing all withdraws and other discards for shipping to charity or recycle/disposal.
  • Performing physical processing for newly received materials such as standing order/added volume titles and loose leaf updates, identify stamping, labelling, and adding security strips as required.
  • Entering and editing descriptive Dublin Core metadata for digital objects located in the university's institutional repository according to international standards and internal policies.
  • Collaborating with the departmental Library Assistant IV to determine correct descriptive metadata for various digital objects such as photographs, manuscripts, institutional records etc.
  • Collaborating with the institutional repository committee to maintain high standards and organize effective workflows.
  • Creating and maintaining a MS Excel spreadsheet to document departmental activity.
  • Maintaining electronic copies of several departmental policy and procedures manuals using MS Word and MS Excel as necessary.
  • Compiling and maintaining records related to donated materials.
  • Attending staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Liaising with librarians and staff, assists in training of students.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Library Clerk III you will possess a Library & Information Technology (LIT) Diploma and a minimum of six (6) months related experience. You demonstrate strong communication skills, excellent attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to function independently and as part of a team. Strong organizational skills, extensive knowledge of MS Office, internet browsers and e-mail applications and a good working knowledge of an academic library and its resources will ensure your success in this position. Experience with an integrated library systems will be considered an asset.
