Position: Library Assistant IV (NSGEU Local 79)

Department: Patrick Power Library

Annual Salary: $41,782 - $51,073 (Group 7)

Under the general direction of the Librarian, Information Technology Services, the Library Assistant IV offers research data management support to Saint Mary's University faculty, students and staff; creates, maintains and updates online resources related to research data management. Under the general direction of the Reference and Research Librarian, the Library Assistant IV provides reference services to Saint Mary's University patrons and the general public and instructs library users in the use of library resources.

Responsibilities

Duties as the Library Assistant IV include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists with the deposit of research data in appropriate data repositories (including SMU Dataverse and Portage FRDR) and the creation and maintenance of Research Data management plan
  • On a day-to-day basis, answering inquiries from the University community by email, telephone or in person. Schedules meetings with members of the University community to respond to inquiries.
  • Researching online information to respond to inquiries. Assists in identifying high impact journals and journal quality for individual disciplines.
  • Creates, maintains and updates online resources, such as research data management subject guides.
  • Assists in promoting Saint Mary's University scholarly publications and assists in developing and maintaining SMU Scholarly collections and bibliographies, using RefWorks or other reference management software.
  • Assists in the development of instructional materials and training tools related to research data management, and library-related services.
  • Determines effective strategies for the researcher to use in supporting their research, recommending and teaching how to use:
    • library web pages to find reference materials to assist the researcher who requires foundational knowledge on their topic;
    • library catalogue, using unique search terms and strategies to find relevant books, ebooks, government documents and other materials to complete their literature search and review or to support a wide variety of curriculum learning requirements;
    • library databases, using unique, relevant, database specific search terms and strategies to find relevant journal articles, trade publications, magazine and newspaper articles to complete their literature search and review;
    • external resources, using search engines and acquired specialist and database specific knowledge, to find relevant statistics, data, and websites to complete their literature search and review; and
    • citation style handbooks, resources and software to properly cite their research sources
  • Consulting internally with other library staff and externally with other library and information organizations to ensure the researcher gets access to the most appropriate research materials available.
  • Maintaining current awareness of library web pages, internal library catalogue systems, commercial databases, and external sources of information available through government and other library/information organizations' web sites.
  • Contributing to professional development activities that increase current awareness of relevant tools and resources and sharing this knowledge with other staff, formally and informally.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures for the Research Help services and assists in the training and mentoring of graduate students and other new staff providing the Research Help service.
  • Contributes to the day-to-day operations of the Research Help service and communications with other Research Help staff through email and blog communications.
  • Assumes responsibility for scheduled shifts on the Research Help desk; responsible for finding a replacement and communicating schedule changes initiated by them to all Research Help desk staff.
  • Documents information about the assistance provided by the Research Help desk through the recording of quantitative and qualitative data (e.g. statistics and descriptive summaries).
  • Attends Research Data and Reference support meetings, classroom presentations and information sessions.
  • Provides an annual report to the Librarian Information Technology.
  • Other duties as assigned

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Library Assistant IV you will possess a University degree and a minimum of one (1) year of related library experience. Library and Information Technology Diploma will be considered an asset. As the successful applicant, you will have good working knowledge of an academic library and its resources, including scholarly resources; working knowledge of information technology, data management and their applications. You will further demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills, attention to detail and accuracy, and strong organizational skills and ability to function independently and as part of a team. Extensive knowledge of MS Office, internet browsers and e-mail applications is essential. Website maintenance experience will be considered an asset.
