Position: Library Assistant I (NSGEU Local 79)

Department: Patrick Power Library

Annual Salary: $33,283 - $38,202 (Group 4)

Under the supervision of the Cataloguing/Metadata Librarian, the Library Assistant I searches, retrieves, evaluates and edits derived cataloguing copy from internal and external databases.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Duties as the Library Assistant I include, but are not limited to:

Cataloguing Materials in the Novanet Integrated Library System (ILS)

  • Searching for, examining, and retrieving bibliographic materials from Novanet and various external databases.
  • Loading records to the ILS and adding SMU holding records and item records to imported/existing records.
  • Processing new books, gifts, recons, added volumes, serial holdings, government documents, electronic materials (eBooks, DVDs, websites).
  • Assigning and checking shelf location against the internal policies file.
  • Assigning and checking Gaelic Cutter numbers against the file.
  • Processing rush requests from library patrons and other library departments as required.
  • Adding barcodes to physical items as required.
  • Adding relevant holding and item information to electronic records and physical items.

Quality Assurance

  • Editing bibliographical, holding and item records to reflect current cataloguing standards and the nature of the SMU material either in hand or online.
  • Proofreading cataloguing records for purposes of assuring that MARC, AACR2, and RDA quality standards are achieved and maintained.
  • Correcting quality errors when they are discovered.
  • Working with students, Library Assistants, and Library Clerks to ensure standards are maintained.
  • Engaging in continuous editing, rewriting, updating and modifying of the Library Assistant Procedures manual to reflect current best operating practices.

Miscellaneous, Education and Training

  • Filing monthly law guide updates.
  • Responding to external cataloguing requests, searches, inquiries, or problems brought into the Cataloguing area for other departments of the Library.
  • Assisting with special projects.
  • Responding to volunteer requests from the Library Departments.
  • Maintaining the book display on the Library's main level.
  • Providing initial and ongoing Aleph, Bookwhere, and cataloguing training to part time student employees and NSCC work term students.
  • Supplementing initial training with additional modules as circumstances present themselves through the student's term.
  • Learning new work related skills from available print and electronic sources.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Library Assistant I you will possess a Library & Information Technology (LIT) Diploma in addition to one (1) year of related experience. You demonstrate strong communication skills; excellent attention to detail and accuracy; and strong organizational skills with the ability to function independently and as part of a team. Extensive knowledge of MS Office, internet browsers and e-mail applications as well as working knowledge of an academic library and its resources will round out your success in this position. Experience with integrated library systems will be considered an asset.
