Off-Site Research Construction Centre

The Off-site Construction Research Centre (OCRC) is a multi-disciplinary research centre that conducts research in a variety of topic areas including digital technology implementation, constructability, materials and structures testing, building envelope testing, Lean construction, policy, and standardization. The OCRC's activities focus on applied research with over 30 industry partners and is governed by an Advisory Board. The OCRC works closely with the Department of Civil Engineering.

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri | 7:45 am - 4:00 pm | 36.25 hours per week

Salary Range: $46,061 - $57,573 per annum

The position is subject to final budgetary approval.

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director, Innovation & Operations, the Lab Technologist will work with the OCRC structural research engineer, OCRC participating faculty members, department technicians and internal collaborators to support the research and development projects focused on materials and structures testing. Additionally, the Lab technologist will support the completion and launch of the new building envelope research lab and will help support a variety of projects.

  • Perform routine laboratory inspections, maintain inventory of equipment, and contribute to a culture of laboratory safety.
  • Develop and maintain equipment in the building envelope research laboratory and in civil engineering research laboratories.
  • Conduct experimental tests on building envelopes to meet specifications in standards. Assist in experimental programs testing building materials and structures.
  • Contribute to writing test and equipment certification reports and conduct occasional field work.
  • Install sensors on test specimens including those measuring displacement, temperature, air flow, strain, pressure, and force. Calibrate sensors and monitor tests using various data acquisition systems.
  • Work with researchers to build test specimens such as walls and beams made of building materials including concrete, steel, wood, and masonry.
  • Install building components in test specimens such as windows, doors, weather sealing, and insulation.
  • Learn highly specialized test procedures using a range of unique testing equipment.
  • Assist Civil Engineering Technologists in some research projects.
  • Assist Civil Engineering Technologists in the management and care of joint laboratory space.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Experience in hands-on applications including working with tools in a construction environment.
  • Experience creating and interpreting CAD drawings.

Additional Strengths:

  • Technologist or Engineering degree in either mechanical, civil, building engineering or related field is an asset.
  • Basic experience in metal fabrication including welding, drilling, cutting, and other basic trades skills.
  • Basic programming skills (MATLAB, Python, LabView, etc.) are considered an asset.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work on unique projects that require development of new fabrication and testing procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to closely follow directions and follow testing standards.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to train new users on research equipment.
