The Off-Site Research Construction Centre (OCRC)

The Off-site Construction Research Centre (OCRC) is a multi-disciplinary centre that conducts research in a variety of topic areas including digital technology implementation, constructability, materials and structures testing, building envelope testing, Lean construction, policy, and standardization. The OCRC's activities focus on applied research with over 35 industry partners and is governed by an Advisory Board. The OCRC recently completed its new 5-year strategic plan reinforcing the vision, mission, values, and objectives of the centre.

WHAT WE OFFER

Full-time | 1 Year Term | Fredericton | On-Campus

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri | 8:15 am - 4:30 pm | 36.25 hours per week

Additional Working Conditions:

• Occasional regional travel is required to conduct fieldwork.

Salary Range: $54,358 - $70,665 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Director, Innovation & Operations, the Lab Manager will work with the OCRC structural research engineer, OCRC participating faculty members, department technicians and internal collaborators to support the research and development projects focused on materials and structures testing.

• Manage access to space and resources associated with the building envelope lab, ensuring success in student-supported projects and contract research.
• Maintain lab equipment and OCRC-owned computer equipment.
• Conduct routine laboratory inspections.
• Develop, maintain, and repair (or arrange repair of) equipment in the building.
• Train, teach, and coordinate associated qualified personnel in lab environment.
• Supervise experiential tests on building envelopes to meet specifications in standards.
• Support experiential programs testing building materials and structures.
• Ensure lab users are following lab-specific protocols and safety guidelines.
• Develop and update appropriate guidelines and procedure manuals.
• Develop and maintain certification of the building envelope lab.
• Create, maintain, and administer the budget for the building envelope lab.
• Maintain knowledgeable of best practices and implement them within the laboratory setting.
• Install sensors on test specimens including those measuring displacement, temperature, air flow, strain, pressure, and force.
• Calibrate sensors and monitor tests using various data acquisition systems.
• Collaborate with researchers to build test specimens such as walls and beams made of building materials.
• Install building components in test specimens such as windows, doors, weather sealing, and insulation.
• Support the Director, Innovation and Operations in business development strategies.
• Identify and foster relationships with industry partners.
• Seek new contract research projects.
• Approach and sell potential partners on current or upcoming opportunities.
• Other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING

• Post Secondary Education in Trades, Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience in a construction, engineering, laboratory, or related environment.

Additional Strengths

• Experience in hands-on applications including working with tools in a construction-type environment is preferred.
• Experience in budgeting and maintaining budgets, proposals, and technical report writing are considered strong assets.
• Experience creating and interpreting CAD drawings.
• Basic experience and training in metal fabrication including welding, drilling, cutting, and other related skills are considered an asset.
• Ability to work on unique projects that require the development of new fabrication and testing procedures.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to closely follow testing standards.
• Basic programming skills (Matlab, Python, LabView, etc.) are considered an asset.
• Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a research team.
• Ability to train new users on research equipment.
