NSCAD University

• Ensures the good working order of all equipment by maintaining the jewellery equipment, hand tools, and teaching aids (includes inspecting, lubricating, adjusting, repairing, cleaning, ordering parts and supplies for, and replacing when required).
• Plans and implements a preventative maintenance schedule.
• Carries out health and safety orientation for those working in the studio and enforces established health and safety policies/practices; ensures safe work habits and maintains equipment for safe use.
• Cleans Studio on a daily basis: washes counter areas, sinks, returns tools to proper places and cleans up acid spills.
• Upon request, and in consultation with Jewellery Faculty, prepares materials or equipment for specific course requirements.
• Oversees, processes, and collects payment for some course related student works such as electro-plating, electroforming, 3D printing, castings etc.
• Maintains inventory by assessing supply and future demand for studio materials and makes appropriate purchases.
• Keeps accounting records for all purchases and budgets for future expenditures and needs.
• Assists students, faculty, and staff in using equipment and facilities; demonstrates usage of equipment and studio; provides technical assistance and advice regarding projects & appropriate equipment to use or buy.
• Maintains the online presence of the studio including departmental learning management page, social media, digital tool library and evolving digital resources supporting online engagement with the department.
• Administer established health and safety policies/practices; promotes safe work habits and maintain equipment for safe use.

A Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration of studies in metal (jewellery) combined with three or four years of experience in metal (jewellery) and jewellery making is required (an equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered). Technical proficiency in jewellery and hollowware processes and techniques are required. The Technician must be completely familiar with the maintenance and use of jewellery manufacturing machinery. Experience working in a post-secondary educational environment is an asset. Knowledge of 3D printing, laser cutting and the software, (Rhino 3D, Adobe), to support these processes is considered an asset. Very good interpersonal skills and time management are considered an asset. Ability to work in a noisy environment with frequent interruptions is an asset. Knowledge regarding health and safety issues, and the ability to integrate evolving health and safety protocols are required.
