Position: International Student Advisor - Student Engagement (2 Year Contract)

Annual Salary: $45,000 - $55,000 + 4% in lieu of vacation

Under the supervision of the Manager of International Student Centre, the International Student Advisor - Student Engagement participates in the development and delivery of programs and services and promotes positive interaction and integration of international students into the academic and social life of the University. The International Student Advisor - Student Engagement is responsible for maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment for international students and facilitates opportunities for Canadian students to have intercultural experience. The position also assists the Manager in advising the University's international students. 

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Duties as the International Student Advisor - Student Engagement include, but are not limited to:

  • Meets with students individually by appointment or on a walk-in-basis.
  • Assists students with all types of queries including academic, financial, employment, housing, and personal.
  • Intervenes or acts as an advocate for students within the University community and with external agencies, government and community.
  • Responsible for the Students Acting for Global Awareness (SAGA) programs including development of an annual plan and the recruitment and supervision of volunteers.
  • Responsible for the planning and delivery of the SAGA cultural programs both on and off campus.
  • Oversees the SAGA program development through professional workshops and training.
  • Assists with the development, planning and delivery of annual programs for international students: Welcome Weeks, International Night, and Global Months.
  • Assists with the International student Career Experience Certificate Program (ICE).
  • Assists with the development and delivery of programming to better support and engage international students.
  • Creates additional programming to allow for intercultural experiences for domestic students.
  • Fosters closer collaboration with The Language Centre and other internal stakeholders.
  • Develops opportunities for faculty and staff to engage with international students.
  • Coordinates the Airport Pickup Program for new incoming internal degree students in September, January and summer sessions.
  • Coordinates the Airport Pickup Program for The Language Centre's English as a Second language (ESL) students every two months.
  • Hires and supervises students as airport greeters.
  • Oversees the updates and maintenance of the International Centre's departmental website.
  • Serves on various University committees.
  • Represents the University internationally for various projects and projects and programs, as required.
  • Participates and represents the University in international recruitment fairs as required.
  • Conducts assessment and evaluation on programs and develops summary reports annually.
  • Represents Saint Mary's University by presenting at regional, national and international conferences as required.

What you'll need

Qualifications

As the ideal candidate, you will be an effective and thoughtful communicator with a willingness to build on the delivery of high quality customer service. Your cross-cultural awareness, will be complemented by an Undergraduate degree plus a minimum of two (2) years of directly related experience. In particular, a high degree of professional, strong organizational and presentation skills, and a proficiency in MS Office is required. Experience at a Canadian post-secondary institution and with Banner are considered assets. Knowledge of a second language would be considered an asset.
