This is a Term employment opportunity for the period of January 2024 to June 2025 (with an opportunity for extension), located at NBCC's Moncton campus.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

As part of the School of Health and Wellness, and reporting to the Academic Chair, the Instructor, Opticianry is responsible for planning and preparing instructional materials and resources; establishing and managing a positive learning environment; instructing and evaluating students; building and sustaining professional relationships with students, colleagues, community partners, and stakeholders; as well as other related duties.

Specific instructional areas may include, but are not limited to:

  • Communication Techniques for Opticians
  • Ethical Practice for Opticians
  • Business Fundamentals for Opticianry
  • Fundamentals of Reading and Writing for Healthcare Professionals
  • Mathematical Science for Opticians
  • Ophthalmic Applications
  • Applications of Ocular Science
  • Optical Screening and Eye Health
  • Other course work as necessary

This position may also support curriculum design and development from a subject matter expert lens and will include supervision of students completing off-site Opticianry practicums.

Additional responsibilities include organization of laboratory supplies, scheduling of laboratory activities, classroom management, academic assessment, etc. Hours of work will include weekdays.

You will be required to teach students online, in the classroom, and in the lab. You will be willing and able to integrate technology and various learning techniques into teaching practices.

Qualifications

  • A diploma in Opticianry from an accredited institution with related experience in optical dispensing, and an active, certified member of the Opticians Association of Canada (OAC).
  • Candidates must be in possession of, or be eligible for, licensing and registration with the Opticians Association of New Brunswick (Opticians) and remain licensed with good standing.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with a minimum of five (5) years of recent and related experience.
  • Highly flexible with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to navigate and build relationships effectively throughout the organization.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, analytical ability, and innovative thinking.
  • Self-motivated, service and results oriented.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and within a team.
  • A desire for continuous learning and growth.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of the accreditation process to assist with program accreditation and experience in other areas of Opticianry will be considered an asset.
  • Preference may be given to candidates who have experience working in a post-secondary environment.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered as equivalent. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be raised.
