Position: Instructional Designer: Learning Experience (Contract to March 31, 2019)

Department: Global Commons Studio for Teaching and Learning

Annual Salary: $45,000 - $48,000 (inclusive of vacation pay)

The role of Instructional Designer at Saint Mary's University is to align teaching practice, learning activities, and assessments to ensure that students get targeted and timely feedback that reflects learning. Using adult learning principles along with instructional theories and principles learning experiences are developed specifically for multi-mode access, online delivery, and accessibility. By managing the work of subject matter experts and others to deliver courses, targeted teaching strategies provide enhanced student learning and achieve institutional teaching standards, if applicable.

Working with faculty, colleagues, and subject matter experts to design and develop learning materials, they train them to use a variety of teaching instruments to deepen student learning. They select and use a variety of techniques to define and develop instructional materials, leveraging technology to deliver them.

As part of the Studio team, each instructional designer plays a support role to the Software and Application Centre when they run into pedagogical or technical challenges.

Responsibilities

Duties as the Instructional Designer include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborating with faculty and colleagues to analyze instructional and course outcomes.
  • Utilizing accepted instructional theories and principles to produce learning materials.
  • Incorporating adult learning principles when designing and developing instructional materials.
  • Providing expertise in planning, developing, and delivery of learning experiences in a variety of learning spaces, particularly online.
  • Designing and developing learning content and assessments with faculty and colleagues for use in a variety of learning environments.
  • Designing a variety of instructional materials for traditional instructor-led courses, online programs, web-based learning aids or products, and other programs as needed.
  • Redesigning courses for online presentation that are conducive to distance learning programs while still adhering to academic goals of the institution.
  • Recommending changes to existing courses, including technology or instructional methods, to better adhere to delivery options for the course.
  • Designing online and instructor-led training
  • Analyzing and applying trends in learning techniques and technologies.
  • Supporting faculty and colleagues when trouble-shooting teaching approaches and technologies.
  • Writing instructional text or scripts in written, audio, and video formats.
  • Developing modes of assessments, such as tests or quizzes.
  • Brainstorming creative learning treatments and innovative instructional strategies.
  • Analyzing courses to ensure they meet/exceed institutional standards and providing reports for accreditation.
  • Adapting coursework to assist learners with disabilities so that they are able to experience the same learning opportunities as others.
  • Remaining aware of all emerging LMS updates and instructional technologies and making recommendations about when to adopt certain systems in order to continue to offer the best learning experience possible.
  • Consulting with colleagues at external institutions.
  • Collaborating on external learning projects.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities and attending and/or presenting at conferences.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Instructional Designer you will possess two (2) years of recent and related experience (related fields: experience design, information design, and/or communications) in an instructional design and curriculum development department within a higher education environment along with a Master's degree in Education with focus in curriculum and instruction. A Certified Professional in Learning & Performance (CSTD), or a Certified Performance Technologist (ISPI) will be considered an asset. You demonstrate knowledge of and uses for leading technologies; excellent project management skills; experience with Adult Learning principles and learning styles; and experience with streaming and casting audio and video, using different file types and formats, and operating online conference software. As the successful applicant you must be able to work independently along with demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
