The Office of the President invites applications for the position of Harassment and Discrimination Advisor.

Classification: 2 Year Contract (Renewable) 21 hours per week

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the University President, the Harassment and Discrimination Advisor is an impartial and confidential resource to faculty, students and staff on matters of harassment and discrimination. The Advisor is a resource to the Harassment and Discrimination Policy Committee and monitors the University's Harassment and Discrimination Policy for effectiveness. The Advisor is responsible for facilitating formal investigations and informal resolution processes as well as making recommendations regarding training and education in the area of Harassment and Discrimination.

The Advisor carries out the duties of the office in a confidential, fair and impartial manner, consistent with the principles of procedural fairness. Reporting directly to the President, the Advisor is responsible to perform the following aspects of the role:

  • Advises faculty, students and staff on issues of harassment and/or discrimination, sexualized violence and other related matters
  • Facilitates informal resolution processes whenever possible
  • First point of contact for formal H&D complaints, then referring to external investigation process
  • Manages and redirects issues that do not meet criteria of H&D Policy
  • Acts as Chair to the Harassment and Discrimination Committee, attending meetings and preparing background materials as required
  • Collaborates with Human Resources, the Office of Student Experience, and Accessibility Office on issues of harassment and discrimination within the MSVU community
  • Assesses the effectiveness of the Harassment and Discrimination Policy and makes recommendations on revisions
  • Reports to the President on activities of the Advisor, while maintaining required confidentiality
  • Prepares an annual report for presentation to the MSVU Board's Human Resources and Governance Committees
  • Collaborates with other provincial post-secondary institutions and other relevant networks
  • May require flexible work hours beyond scheduled

What you'll need

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a master's degree in Education and/or Social Sciences with several years' related experience in a similar role. Candidates will be knowledgeable about relevant legislation such as the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act, the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and the NS Accessibility Act. They will have extensive experience and skill in conflict resolution and interpreting policies and collective agreements. They will be a strong communicator with proven success in obtaining cooperative and innovative solutions to complex problems. A background in conducting mediations and delivering workshops and educational sessions is required. It will be important to have experience working from a trauma informed approach. Candidates should be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams).
