Under the direction of the Property Manager, Grounds/Janitorial is to provide grounds' care and housekeeping services as assigned while adhering to the standards and practices established by Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

• Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in the assigned area(s).
• Keep common areas clean and presentable, this includes but not limited to sweeping walkways, wiping, and vacuuming floors, cleaning common area washrooms and shared facilities.
• Perform winter snow and ice clearance duties such as but not limited to, salting, or shoveling of snow from steps, landings, emergency exits, ramps and walkways as assigned.
• Prepare soil, plants flowerbeds, trees, bushes etc., prunes trees and shrubs, grass cutting, hedge trimming, and other general landscaping duties as required.
• Complete work orders and material requisitions as required.
• Carry out routine cleaning, inspection and servicing of equipment and report defects to supervisor.
• Erect, renew and repair fencing, signage, clothes lines, and poles as required.
• Deliver materials, supplies and appliances to Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency properties.
• Report maintenance requirements and any unusual events to supervisor.

What you'll need

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or high school equivalent plus two years' related experience.
• Ability to understand and operate equipment involved in cleaning and tools related to ground maintenance appropriately and safely.
• Ability to properly handle cleaning chemicals.
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety.
• Ability to perform tasks in a safe manner according to the Department of Labour and Advanced Education and NSPHA safety standards and policies.
• Possess interpersonal skills to deal with co-workers, tenants, contractors and vendors, other departments, and the public in a positive, tactful, courteous, and cooperative manner.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision, as well as in a team environment.
• Work cooperatively with others and display a positive attitude to further the goals of the organization.
• Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.

Assets

• Possess current Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications.

Across its districts, NSPHA provides more than 11,200 safe, affordable homes as part of its Housing Services to seniors and families. District offices manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia's housing stock. Their responsibilities include administering tenant applications and placements, collecting rent, resolving tenant issues, and maintaining and repairing properties.
