The Opportunity
The General and Digital Fabrication Technician will work collaboratively with the Learning Commons hub of teaching and learning spaces, resources and technical services that enrich NSCAD's academic experiences. The Technician is primarily responsible for developing and supporting general and digital fabrication shops, facilities and equipment. The technician coordinates activities within the work area, including future planning, budget management, resource management, protocols (health and safety, access), and general maintenance. The technician also offers technical expertise, coordinates shop demonstrations for classes, and clears users for safe use of equipment and materials.

Responsibilities
- Provide consistent guidance and support to students, faculty and staff ensuring uniform access to workshop materials and equipment.
- Build and maintain resources for teaching and increased student access to the lab, including:
- Online procedures guidelines, file templates, and formatting guidelines;
- A physical library of material samples and machine settings relevant equipment to support area curriculum.
- Administer a comprehensive fabrication facility including purchasing, maintaining equipment and ensuring adequate resources are on hand to support academic requirements.
- Provide feedback on the direction and growth of the lab, including capital spending priorities and changes in industry standards.
- Train and supervise staff and student assistance as required and assigned.
- Provide support to academic computing services on campus and, in collaboration, support the development, planning, and design of academic spaces with a particular emphasis on digital technology.
- Administer established health and safety policies/practices; promotes safe work habits and maintains equipment for safe use.
What you'll need
Qualifications
- An undergraduate in Design or Fine Art and at least 3-4 years' experience with organizing analogue and digital fabrication tools, equipment and facilities (or the equivalent combination of education and experience) is required.
- Must have specialized knowledge of analogue and digital fabrication processes and equipment. This includes key specialized pieces of equipment such as a CO2 Laser Cutter, SLA resin and FDM filament 3D printers, a CNC mill and a Plastics Thermo Vacuum former.
- Must have demonstrated experience and a willingness to acquire and advance knowledge in using and troubleshooting industry standard 2D and 3D softwares including: Rhino 3D, Fusion 360, and Adobe Illustrator.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, service orientation, and an ability to communicate effectively are essential.
- Well-developed organizational and time management skills are required as well as the ability to work in a busy environment in which frequent interruptions are prevalent.
- Experience working in a post-secondary educational or other training environment is an asset.
The successful candidate must have demonstrated knowledge in health and safety due to the inherent risks and hazards associated with the position. Due to the nature of the equipment and/or materials used, the incumbent must be attentive and responsive to potential safety hazards and take appropriate precautionary measures as required. If safety needs in the shop are not being met for any reason, the incumbent must be able to communicate issues to relevant stakeholders in a clear and timely manner.
Supervision is broad and for the most part the incumbent works independently. The incumbent co-ordinates their own workload, in consultation with the Director, Teaching & Learning and Division Chair(s). The incumbent supervises and trains student assistants and coordinates the schedule of classes in the lab in consultation with faculty.
