The Fashion Technician is responsible for overseeing the organization, and maintenance, of a limited access Fashion Studio. Responsibilities of the incumbent include managing departmental budgets in conjunction with the Chair and department faculty, purchasing of supplies, maintenance of equipment, and providing instruction concerning the proper usage of the equipment and facilities to students, faculty and other users of the fashion studio. The incumbent hires, trains, schedules and supervises student assistants, and ensures the implementation and application of adequate health and safety policies and practices.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Ensures proper working order of industrial sewing machines, sergers, steam irons and other related manufacturing tools and equipment by performing regular maintenance and arranging specialized repairs.
  • Ensures general clean-up in the area.
  • Provides technical assistance with respect to selection of materials and appropriate uses of garment and pattern making techniques when faculty are not available.
  • Ensures health and safety of students by promoting awareness with an initial classroom discussion followed by reminders throughout the term.
  • Provides instruction on a regular basis concerning the use of tools, industrial sewing machines, sergers, industrial steam irons and dress forms.
  • Research and order supplies as needed in response to needs of fashion faculty;
  • Manages departmental budgets in conjunction with the Chair and department faculty and maintains up-to-date record of suppliers and departmental inventory.
  • Keeps current with new technology and information related to the field (ongoing development).

What you'll need

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration of studies in Fashion combined with three to four years of experience in fashion and related fields or equivalent education and experience is required.

Technical proficiency in drafting and construction processes and techniques is required. The Technician must be completely familiar with the maintenance and use of clothing manufacturing machinery. Experience working in a post-secondary environment is an asset.
