The Opportunity
Within Nautel, our specialized division, Nautel Sonar, which excels in designing, developing, and manufacturing cutting-edge sonar systems and sub-systems. Our clientele ranges from international defense entities to non-defense customers. At Nautel Sonar, we provide a comprehensive range of OEM sonar products as well as complete "wet-end" sonar sub-systems.
We have an exciting new position within this specialized division, based in Hackett's Cove (with the ability to work in a hybrid arrangement). This position will play a critical role in the design, development, and implementation of advanced sonar systems for underwater applications. You will be part of a talented engineering team responsible for creating cutting-edge technology solutions to meet the demands of the marine defense and research sectors. Your expertise in sonar systems and extensive engineering experience will contribute to the success of our projects and ensure the highest level of performance and innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
System Design and Development: Lead the design and development of sonar systems, including transducers, signal processing, acoustic modeling, power electronics, filtering matching, and communication interfaces. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate sonar technology into larger systems.
Technical Expertise: Serve as the subject matter expert in sonar technology, providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers. Stay updated with industry trends, advancements, and best practices to drive continuous improvement in our products.
System Integration: Ensure seamless integration of sonar systems with existing platforms and infrastructure. Work closely with software and hardware teams to optimize system performance and enhance overall functionality.
Testing and Validation: Develop and execute comprehensive testing and validation procedures to assess sonar system performance and accuracy. Analyze test results and identify areas for improvement, making necessary adjustments to achieve optimal outcomes.
Team Management: Lead sonar system engineering projects, ensuring adherence to system requirements, timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Provide regular progress reports to project management, senior stakeholders and communicate technical concepts effectively.
Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including acoustics experts, electrical engineers, software developers, and project managers as well as other internal stakeholders such as Sales, Customer Service, and Operations, to create robust and reliable sonar solutions.
Continuous Improvement: Contribute to continuous improvement efforts regarding key Engineering processes and activities.
Troubleshooting and Support: Provide technical support to resolve any issues related to sonar systems in operational deployments or during testing phases.
Compliance and Regulations: Ensure that all sonar systems adhere to industry standards, regulations, and safety guidelines.
What you'll need
Qualifications
Qualifications and Requirements:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, or a related field.
Proven experience (typically 5+ years) in designing, developing, and testing sonar systems for underwater applications.
Strong understanding of power electronics, acoustics, signal processing, and acoustic modeling techniques.
Strong understanding of New Product Introduction Processes.
Proficiency in using industry-standard software tools for sonar system design and analysis.
Proficiency in Requirements Management tools and techniques.
Experience with relevant MIL-STD's such MIL-S-901 Shock, MIL-STD-167-1A Vibration, MIL-STD-810 Environmental, and MIL-STD-461 Electromagnetic Compatibility.
Experience with underwater systems communication protocols and integration with other marine systems.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.
Strong leadership abilities, with the capability to lead and motivate a team effectively.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Understanding of relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety guidelines for underwater systems, including key military standards such as MIL-S-901 Shock, MIL-STD-167-1A Vibration, MIL-STD-810 Environmental, and MIL-STD-461 Electromagnetic Compatibility.
