Position: Employment Development Officer (APC)

Department: Co-operative Education

Annual Salary: $47,807 - $61,609 (Group 4)

Under the supervision of the Senior Employment Development Officer, the Employment Development Officer (EDO) develops and co-ordinates activities for promotion of co-op experiences, recruitment, selection, admission and development of students; liaises with and develops employers; prepares students for co-op work terms.

Responsibilities

Duties as the Employment Development Officer include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and coordinating activities for the recruitment of students to the Program.
  • Meeting with potential applicants and providing details about the Co-op program and the application process.
  • Scheduling, coordinating, facilitating, and assisting with workshops for co-op students.
  • Ensuring students are informed of appropriate work terms and are adequately prepared for the application process.
  • In collaboration with Career Services staff, coaching in job search skills, including resumes, cover letters, and preparation for interviews (including mock interviews).
  • Working together with other co-op staff to enhance instruction, leadership and assistance with job search skill preparation for students.
  • Monitoring student Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) to ensure Program criteria are being met.
  • Working with the Senior Employment Development Officer to improve and develop training and coaching methods.
  • Under the supervision of the Senior EDO, ensuring students are aware of the risks associated with work terms, mainly overseas but also domestic placements. For overseas (and USA) work terms the EDO refers students to International Activities (IA) for pre-departure workshops and/or IA recommended web sites and/or advising the student(s) to arrange for a one on one meeting with IA staff.
  • Alerting students to the availability of professional services through the Conflict Resolution Advisor.
  • Sourcing, assessing, developing and maintaining working relationships with employers for Co-op.
  • Conducting site visits including attending annual career fairs, trade shows, open houses, information sessions, seminars, dinners and other similar events where potential employers and participants gather.
  • Distributing promotional material to Employers to generate interest in the Program.
  • Liaising with external companies and organizations (both new and existing companies) to promote the Co-op Program and our students, as well as establishing sound working relationships, fostering understanding of the co-op process, and attempting to obtain job postings from companies.
  • Ensuring work term job descriptions are assessed by an academic advisor or designate.
  • Ensuring work term reports are completed and properly processed.
  • Ensuring the Senior Employment Development Officer is aware of difficulties with students or employers.
  • Maintaining appropriate documentation and record keeping on both student and employer activities.
  • Compiling information and reports.
  • Investigating and recommending solutions for issues identified by the Student or Employer during the site visit.
  • Assisting with the development of the Co-op website and database.
  • Liaising with other areas of Student Services and the University as needed.
  • Developing and providing summative assessment data as required.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Employment Development Officer you will possess an Undergraduate degree and a minimum two (2) years of recent and related experience. You demonstrate the ability to converse with co-workers and/or clientele, in a professional manner; excellent organizational and customer service skills; experience making presentations to small groups; strong written skills; and a proficiency with Microsoft Office.
