Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth 811 Mental Health and Addictions for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health. 

EMC delivers a high-quality pre-hospital care program and Telehealth service to Nova Scotians each and every day. We achieve this through the more than 1,400 employees who work with us including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communication officers and support staff.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager Operations, the Operations Supervisor (OS), EHS LifeFlight is responsible to oversee the EHS LifeFlight staff and systems to ensure the delivery of safe and efficient service that meets or exceeds customer and patient expectations.

In this role you will organize and lead mission logistics, base and satellite base processes, support the Critical Care teams, workwith the air and ground carriers to ensure a safe and efficient environment, implement changes to improve service levels, liaise with medical partners and supportthe functions of the Medical Director.

The OS will positively communicate company philosophy and policy so that there is shared realization of the company's goals in the program.

  • Support and oversee the day-to-day operations of the LifeFlight program.
  • Provide "on call" Duty Manager coverage.
  • Oversee staffing, payroll and scheduling.
  • Lead the development of LifeFlight Post-Accident Incident Plan (PAIP) drills, debriefs, and edits and support business continuity and disaster planning activities.
  • Oversee materials management, purchase of capital equipment and supplies, preventative maintenance and repair.
  • Conduct audits onsite and at the IWK.
  • Participate in various committees. Conduct effective group meetings (including staff and safety) and lead staff by example.
  • Assist the Clinical Program in the organization of aviation safety educational requirements for critical care teams as well as support all educational initiatives.
  • Participate in the orientation of new employees to the program.
  • Represent EHS LifeFlight/EMC on external public committees, including special events management, and presentations if required.
  • Assess employee performance and provide performance reviews
  • Ensure all operational customer service inquiries -are managed in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Play an active role in maintaining the accreditation of the LifeFlight program.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager, Clinical Leaders, Clinical Supervisor, Medical Director and other stake holders to assess changes in practices, policies, research and their potential or actual impact on clinical care and develop strategies for improvement.
  • Promote a safe working environment by identifying and resolving potential risk issues.
  • Participate in the ongoing maintenance and continuous development of the Quality Assurance Program.

What you'll need

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a Registered Nurse, Paramedic or Registered Respiratory Therapist or equivalent experience
  • Registered, or eligible to be registered, with the appropriate provincial professional organization
  • Undergraduate degree in a health related discipline or equivalent related to this position is recommended. An equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer may be considered
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a Critical Care or high volume pre-hospital environment an asset
  • Experience in an Air Medical environment is an asset, but not required
  • Proven track record as a leader with the ability to work independently, as well as within a team environment
  • Experience in the conducting of case reviews and investigations an asset

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills are required
  • Able to exercise independent judgment and problem solve with discretion.
  • Solid managerial/supervisory experience and formal business training and/or university diploma or degree is an asset.
  • Displays an overall aptitude for negotiation and dispute resolution skills: leads team members by example and practices good time management.
  • Exercises a significant degree of discretion in the decision making process.
  • Ability to motivate and lead staff in a dynamic environment.
  • Possesses the ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of healthcare management, information technology, finance, and human resources practices.
  • Extensive understanding of EMS operations
  • Proficient in the use of computers and information systems, including Microsoft Office applications
