Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth 811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.
EMC delivers a high-quality pre-hospital care program and Telehealth service to Nova Scotians each and every day. We achieve this through the more than 1,400 employees who work with us including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communication officers and support staff.

Reporting to the Manager, Performance and Critical Care, the LifeFlight Clinical Supervisor shall be responsible for the administration and assessment of the clinical education, training and quality portfolio within the LifeFlight program of EMC. As such, the incumbent shall be responsible for the day to day oversight and coordination of LifeFlight's education and quality management program, ensuring the provision of quality patient care and continuing medical education within the LifeFlight program that meets clinical, contractual and organizational obligations. This position is responsible to lead and direct LifeFlight's Clinical Leaders.

The supervisor will work closely with the Manager Performance and Critical Care, Senior Manager EHS LifeFlight, the LifeFlight Medical Director and Physician Team Leads, LifeFlight Operations Support Supervisor and clinicians all members of the Performance and Development (P&D) team, EHS Communications Centre personnel, , LifeFlight's contracted partners and other stakeholders.

The incumbent is not required to act in the role of an EHS LifeFlight clinician.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Manage orientation and continuing education through coordinating administrative requirements, conducting needs assessments, curriculum development, designing evaluation strategies and delivery.
  • Incorporate quality assurance trends into education programming.
  • Coordination of the delivery of in-services and elective education offered by the LifeFlight program.
  • Develop and maintain the LifeFlight transport orientation program.
  • Coordinate educational activity related to registration maintenance including aviation safety training, clinical exposure and recertification requirements.
  • Provide feedback and assist the Medical Director in facilitation of the MCP orientation.
  • Collaborate with the LifeFlight Operations Support Supervisor to coordinate the communications, disaster, scene, radio, and other operational related training.
  • Deliver training sessions to LifeFlight clinicians as required.
  • Develop special case reports and evaluation reports on the LifeFlight education portfolio.
  • Oversee the orientation of other clinician ride alongs as required
  • Ensure that the LifeFlight clinical portfolio is compliant with CAMTS accreditation standards.
  • Support the EHS LifeFlight CAMTS Accreditation processes including the maintenance and acquisition of all accreditation related documentation.
  • Collaborate with carrier representatives and the EHS Ground Ambulance System to support critical care transport education and initiatives.

What you'll need

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a health related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer may be considered.
  • Licensed to work in Nova Scotia as a registered health care professional
  • Minimum five years' health care related experience, with a minimum three years' experience at the critical care level required.
  • A minimum of 3 years in a leadership role within a healthcare setting required
  • Strong knowledge of critical care practices required.
  • Current or past Air Medical/Critical Care Transport experience considered an asset.
  • Quality assurance and/or risk management experience a strong asset.
  • Accreditation experience is a strong asset.
  • Project management experience an asset.
  • A diploma/certificate in Adult Education is an asset.
  • Able to exercise independent judgment and problem solve with discretion.
  • Demonstrated effective written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Displays an aptitude for negotiation and dispute resolution skills and leads team members by example.
  • Ability to motivate staff in a dynamic fast-paced environment.
  • Exercises a significant degree of discretion in the decision making process.
  • Possesses the ability to work independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Proficient time management skills to meet deadlines on schedule.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and information systems, including Microsoft office applications, and familiarity with ePCR's or other information systems.
  • Skills in research methods and design an asset.
  • Knowledge and/or expertise in EMS management, information technology, finance, and human resources.
  • Knowledge in the assessment and development of clinical performance indicators.
  • Possesses experience in the operations of a high performance ambulance system and understands the role/importance of a quality improvement program and continuing education within the system.
  • Serve as a duty manager for EHS LifeFlight, on an on-call schedule, make operational decisions that are appropriate for the situation and the delivery of critical care. These decisions have operational, safety, financial implications. As required, collaborate with EHS medical oversight physicians, NSHA and IWK physicians and staff, EHS LifeFlight pilots and clinical crew, Medical Communications Centre staff and others
