Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth 811 Mental Health and Addictions for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health. 

EMC delivers a high-quality pre-hospital care program and Telehealth service to Nova Scotians each and every day. We achieve this through the more than 1,400 employees who work with us including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communication officers and support staff.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Provides advice and makes recommendations to supervisors / managers in identifying potential candidates for early interventions and stay at work processes
  • Liaises with managers/supervisors in communicating with the employee on the first day of illness/injury
  • Creates work transition plans in collaboration with employee's supervisor and supports the employee in fulfilling the plan.
  • Provides advice, direction and support to all relevant stakeholders, including workers and supervisors to achieve the return to work goals of the organization.
  • Maintains and track all aspects of the EMC return to work plans. Arranges for workplace modifications or job restructuring when needed and facilitates regular, open communication between stakeholders to ensure a smooth, seamless transition from short-term disability to long-term disability when required
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates with employees, supervisors and managers and across the organization to maintain a safe and healthy workplace
  • Ensures accuracy of data on submission forms by the employer on STD, LTD and WCB Form 67 statements including last day worked and dates of absence
  • Follows up with employees to ensure appropriate information has been submitted to adjudicate the claim; and request additional information, where necessary
  • Administers the case management processes including attendance of case conferences
  • Maintains regular contact with employee and various stakeholders throughout the disability management process
  • Coordinates all the related medical absence claims and updates employee health files
  • Manages WCB late penalties and explores opportunities to remove or minimize fines from WCB account

What you'll need

Qualifications

  • Disability Management designation (e.g., Certified Disability Management Professional, Certified Return to Work Coordinator) or commiserate work experience
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience, including case management and / or claims management, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Experience in public health, health psychology, mental health, health promotion an asset
  • Experience in using functional abilities and assessments and workplace accommodations
  • Knowledge of government/ provincial legislation and WCB
  • Knowledge and familiarity with private sector insurance schemes
  • Exceptional time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills
  • Analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated confidentiality, tact and diplomacy
  • Superior conflict management, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Computer proficiency
  • Maintain competencies and accountability to licensing bodies in Nova Scotia Experience working with claims management and return to work programs where workforce is governed by collective agreements
  • A comprehensive understanding of the process involved in facilitating and managing effective, timely return to work programs
  • Some understanding of medical terms of reference, with some ability to analyze medical information
