Reporting to the Academic Dean, the Director of Teaching and Learning is responsible for leading the dynamic process of enhancing the teaching and learning experience at NSCAD University through the design and implementation of best practices in art, craft, and design education. The Director of Teaching and Learning is a key position in supporting the holistic educational journey of students and faculty.

Integral to ensuring the success of students and faculty, the Director of Teaching and Learning will join a team committed to responding to the needs of its increasing diverse community, addressing the accessibility challenges attendant to the curricula, and providing ongoing support to faculty to adopt best practices to ensure an active and engaged learning environment.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • In close collaboration with the Academic Dean and in alignment with the Academic Plan: Opportunity and Belonging, 2020-25, the incumbent will create and lead an action plan for Teaching and Learning at NSCAD university based on evidence-based approaches to pedagogy and andragogy in higher education, including timelines, milestones and deliverables;
  • Oversee design, implementation and assessment of a faculty development plan based on analysis and consultation for both online and in person teaching, and design appropriate metrics to assess results of programs.
  • Plan and organize teaching and learning programs, including coaching sessions, workshops, seminars, public presentations for faculty, instructors, teaching assistants and others.
  • Participate in the curriculum renewal process, providing evidence-based approaches and support to the working group/advisory committee on curriculum renewal in the process and components of its work with a lens on the University's commitment to advancing the Equity, diversity and inclusion priorities outlined in the Academic Plan.Lead the institution in managing and accessing educational technologies, with a view to continuous improvement, new approaches and new modalities.
  • Regularly consult with the University community to identify issues of concern about teaching and learning and develop responsive programs.
  • Oversee Learning Commons technicians in the appropriate management of and use of supportive educational resources; where needed, participate in the hiring, monitoring and evaluation of unit personnel. Ensure excellent service delivery in the Learning Commons.
  • Support new faculty in the development of courses, outcomes, and assessment.

What you'll need

Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field (education, teaching and learning, pedagogy, educational technologies) combined with a minimum 6 years' experience in an academic support environment (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Demonstrable knowledge of academic environments, arts-based education and be able to initiate, engage and sustain constructive dialogue with university educators and administrators is required. Experience at supervising technical staff is required. Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills are required. Proficiency with D2L's Brightspace or comparable Learning Management System, along with knowledge of other digital tools to support learning are required.
