The Opportunity
Reporting to the Vice-President (Finance and Administration), the Director of Athletics manages and directs St. Thomas University's athletic and recreation programs, to ensure the provision of a comprehensive program to all students whether they are at a varsity, intramural, club, or recreational level, in conformance with the University's rules and standards and those of various sports governing bodies.

Responsibilities
The Director is expected to represent the University at regular meetings of the regional and national sports governing bodies and to have a comprehensive understanding of their rules and regulations. St. Thomas University competes at the AUS and U Sports levels in women's hockey; and at the ACAA and CCAA level in men's and women's basketball, soccer, volleyball, cross-country, and women's rugby.
A demonstrated commitment to student development and academic success are essential requirements of this position. Supervision of the department staff, including coaching staff for the University's athletics teams, is a significant component of this position, as is the oversight of risk management and safe sport protocols.
In addition to the management of varsity athletics, the Director is responsible for the management of the University's athletics facilities, including the J.B. O'Keefe Fitness Centre, and implementation of campus-wide wellness and fitness initiatives.
The incumbent will be expected to devote significant efforts to successful community outreach and strategic planning initiatives requiring excellent leadership and community relations skills. The position requires strong budgeting and financial management skills and the ability to mount successful fund-raising initiatives that directly support Athletics' operations and marketing plans that result in greater profile and attendance at games.
What you'll need
Qualifications
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in physical education or related field and 3 to 5 years of increasing levels of responsibility in the management of athletics and recreational programs, or related management experience, preferably in a university setting. Knowledge of University programs, regulations, services, and character is an asset. Knowledge of eligibility criteria is essential.
Experience leading programs in the Maritime region and an understanding of the New Brunswick context is considered an asset. The successful candidate must have exceptional leadership abilities to deal with a diverse set of demands and possess a willingness to work nontraditional hours. As spokesperson for the University's athletics programs, the Director must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills and welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with other senior leaders within the University, including the Administrative Management Council.

St. Thomas University
Established in 1910, St. Thomas University is a primarily undergraduate, liberal arts institution with a full-time enrolment of 1600 that offers a Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Social Work and a Master of Social Work. Faculty members are distinguished teachers, researchers and scholars, and the university holds two Canada Research Chairs and a New Brunswick Health Research Foundation Chair.
St. Thomas University originated in 1910, when Basilian Fathers assumed responsibility for St. Thomas College in Chatham, New Brunswick. The college began granting degrees in 1934, was renamed St. Thomas University in 1960, and relocated to Fredericton in 1964. St. Thomas now has 100 full-time faculty, and 12 buildings, several of which have earned architectural design awards and make the campus one of the most renowned in Canada.
Unique Approach to Education
St. Thomas is the only university in Canada wholly dedicated to the study of the liberal arts. A liberal arts education provides a broad base of knowledge and specialized skills that prepare students for a limitless list of careers or post-degree programs.
