What you'll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Research and Program Innovation, the Director of Applied Research and Innovation (ARI) will provide effective leadership and management to NBCC's diverse applied research resources, initiatives, and portfolio.

While contributing to academic well-being and growth across the institution's six campus locations in alignment with NBCC's strategic and operational plans, the Director will work with the College's Deans, Department Heads and Faculty to foster an innovative applied research culture and environment focused on meeting the needs of students, staff and partners. Key responsibilities include:

  • Establish strong networks and strategic alliances to develop and promote community and industry initiatives and partnerships regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally. The Director will lead this work with industry and community partners in the College's six key strategic areas of applied research: healthcare, social innovation, mobile and ubiquitous computing, advanced manufacturing, value added food, and energy efficiency.
  • Build and maintain relationships with applied research networks, funding bodies and community/industry partners, students and staff. The incumbent will contribute to the planning, development and execution of the College's strategic plan as a member of the College's leadership team; support the goals and objectives of the strategic plan and lead the strategic elements and action plans related to applied research and innovation within the division.
  • Manage the applied research and innovation department involves annual planning; progress monitoring and metrics reporting; staff supervision and performance management; oversight of active projects and budgets; external and internal grant submissions and subsequent reporting; policies, procedures and practices; and providing guidance to researchers, faculty and department heads.

What you'll need

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree (a doctorate degree is desirable, but not mandatory), an outstanding record of scholarship, along with five (5) years of leadership and management experience in a broad range of applied research disciplines, projects and initiatives involving multiple academic, industry and community partners (preferably within a post-secondary environment). Experience with new knowledge and product development, and commercialization of research outputs, along with a strong business acumen, and ability to successfully attract, access and manage large research funds is critical. Strong project and finance management skills and a proven record of successful collaborations and partnerships is important. The candidate will demonstrate a commitment to innovation and excellence in teaching, learning and applied research. Excellent interpersonal skills are required to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and external partners/clients. Candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet these qualifications on their resumes.

Written and spoken competence in English is required.

Preference may be given to candidates who have experience working/teaching in a post-secondary environment.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered as equivalent. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be raised.
