The Director of Human Resources is a strategic member of the leadership team and responsible for providing expert advice, oversight, leadership and support for the human resources activities of the university including recruitment and retention, labour relations, training and development, policy development, conflict resolution, human resources reporting, management support, and compensation administration and oversight. The position is a strategic partner with the Associate Vice President, Vice President and President portfolios and provides guidance and support on Human Resources policy development and implementation.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and oversight in the delivery of recruitment initiatives of the University.
  • Provides oversight of position description development for staff positions working with the responsible manager on responsibilities.
  • Provides strategic advice and support to senior and responsible managers with disciplinary matters.
  • Prepares policy statements and works with committees to develop policies for Board approval.
  • Oversees the development and delivery of training to employees as required or in accordance with relevant policy (OHS, first aid etc.)
  • Participant in all collective agreement negotiations, including planning, research, communication, and implementation. If appropriate, serve as lead negotiator or bargaining team member.
  • Prepares text of Collective Agreements in conjunction with legal advisors and senior management team.
  • Maintains communication with Unions and matters related to the Collective Agreement such as grievances, compensation, and interpretation.
  • Provides direct oversight and supervision to the Payroll and Benefits Manager.
  • Develops and manages the Human Resources budget and expenditures.
  • Prepares reports for senior leaders upon request.

What you'll need

Qualifications

An undergraduate degree with specialization in human resources combined with a minimum of 5 year's progressive experience at a management level is required. A master's degree and CPHR designation are preferred. Sound judgement and discretion, and a proven ability to assess and resolve complex and/or sensitive issues is required. Experience working in a unionized environment, interpreting collective agreements, and negotiating as part of a bargaining team and/or lead negotiator is required. Experience with policy development is required. Strong strategic planning, problem-solving, negotiation, facilitation, and organization skills are required. Knowledge of benefit plans, disability processing, plan design and benefit rate costing is preferred.
