• Provide leadership to the Gallery staff to ensure the installation and dismantling of over 100 exhibitions annually is a success;
• Negotiate contracts with professional visiting artists and artwork loans from other galleries and private collections.
• Co-ordinate the exhibitions program and chair the Gallery and Exhibitions Committee (quarterly). This may also include soliciting original exhibition ideas, collaboration with artists, while providing guidance to the gallery staff to ensure a balanced exhibition schedule and oversee the preparation of resource materials.
• Manage risk associated with art and ensure appropriate insurance is in place for artwork on display and storage.
• Responsible for the planning and implementation of the NSCAD Public Lecture Series and annual visiting artists' series in which the Director must: determine priorities, determine appropriate invitees, seek and attract internationally renowned speakers and coordinate the events/or exhibitions.
• Provide leadership in the creation and updating of policies relevant to the Gallery and update the Gallery and Exhibitions Committee and Archives and Collections Committee as necessary on policy decisions and review.
• Develop and maintain a plan for the long-term sustainability of the university art archive and permanent collection. Responsible for the security and custodial care of the NSCAD University permanent collection (with an estimated value of $2.6 Million) and Gallery archives including research requests.
• Play a strategic role in generating new funds for the capital and operating needs of the Gallery System at the University.
• Constantly seek new and creative funding partnerships and create and submit grant applications for funding as appropriate.
• Maintain and establish new relations to advance the curatorial prospects including liaising with other galleries and artists.
• Develop strong ties in the art community to establish both national and international artist, curator and exhibition exchanges as fiscally as possible in addition to public art opportunities.

A Master of Arts, Masters of Fine Arts or Master of Design degree in an exhibitions related field combined with 5 to 10 years progressive experience in programming and management in a museum, public gallery, art or design fair is required or (an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. A PhD in the areas listed above or a related field would be considered an asset.

The incumbent must also have demonstrated skills In budget management and collaboration within a medium sized organization. Demonstrated fund-raising capabilities from private and public sources, including planning and implementation of multi-year funding is also required. Must be able to work flexible hours during events with evenings and weekends as needed to oversee programs and participate in other gallery activities. Experience with collection management and development is preferred.
