The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New Brunswick Saint John invites applications for a 3-year term position in Statistical Data Science at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2027. This position is subject to final budgetary approval.

The University of New Brunswick respectfully acknowledges that its Saint John campus sits on unsurrendered and unceded traditional Wolastoqey land. The river that runs by our university is known as Wolastoq, along which live Wolastoqiyik, "the people of the beautiful and bountiful river." Wolastoq is also known as the St. John River.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Statistics, Data Science with a substantial statistical component, or a closely related area, evidence of, or strong potential for, high-quality independent research, as well as demonstrated or strong promise for excellence in teaching data science. Candidates nearing completion of a PhD in one of these areas may be considered for an initial appointment at the rank of lecturer.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics consists of eight full-time faculty members and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Mathematics and Statistics. This position will support the implementation and growth of the new Bachelor of Data Science (BDSc) program, scheduled to launch in Fall 2027.

Candidates are expected to initiate an active research program that has potential for long-term external funding via Tri-Council grants and/or industry partnerships, and to recruit/supervise students conducting research at undergraduate and graduate levels. Opportunities exist for research collaborations, particularly in Health, Business, and Ecology and Environment, which are concentrations in the BDSc program. Candidates in all areas of statistical data science are encouraged to apply.

UNB Saint John has a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and training. This position includes the development and delivery of data science courses for the new BDSc program, as well as the teaching of core undergraduate and graduate-level statistics courses. The successful candidate will contribute to academic service, including the ongoing development, oversight, and outreach activities related to the BDSc.

Candidates should submit the names and contact information of referees willing to provide letters of reference. One such letter should specifically address the teaching experience of the applicant.

The selection committee will begin reviewing applications on November 20th, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.

The salary for the position depends on the rank at which the successful candidate is hired. Faculty salary grids by rank are available here: https://www.unb.ca/hr/_assets/documents/salary-grids.pdf . Salary and fringe benefits are governed by Sections 35 and 36B of the Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers (AUNBT) 2025-2029 Collective Agreement.
