Position: Counsellor (APC)

Department: Student Affairs and Services

Salary: $71,660 - $92,352 (Group 7)

Under the direction of the Assistant Director, Accessibility, Health and Counselling, the Counsellor provides personal counselling to individuals and groups as well as counselling students in crisis. Creates and facilitates psychoeducational workshops for faculty, staff and students and organizes mental health awareness initiatives. Promotes counselling on campus to students, faculty and staff through workshops and training. Provides specific counselling, groups, workshops and support to specialized populations including International students, student athletics and LGBTQ2 among others.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Duties as the Counsellor include, but not limited to:

  • Providing individual personal counselling using a brief therapy model.
  • Assessing and responding to emergency situations and providing crisis response and counselling.
  • Designing and assigning individually tailored homework for clients.
  • Maintaining appropriate client records.
  • Consulting with the Assistant Director on client cases.
  • Providing clients with the tools needed to help themselves.
  • Responsible for decision making regarding clients mental status (i.e. parental notification).
  • Provides single session counselling sessions for clients new to The Counselling Centre
  • Accepting and making client referrals both internally and externally.
  • Consulting, as required, with other university staff/faculty providing services to students relating to counselling.
  • Designs educational workshops and promotional materials on counselling.
  • Designs programming for specialized populations including international students, student athletics, LGBTQ2.
  • Attends openings of new community facilities, luncheons, meetings, etc., as part of counselling and student services
  • Ensuring own ongoing professional development and research associated with counselling strategies.
  • Consults with student populations (i.e. SMUSA, Societies, etc...) offering leadership, facilitation and education.
  • Attending and participating in regular peer consultations and staff meetings.
  • Under the discretion of the Senior Director or Assistant Director of Student Affairs and Services, be available to provide after-hours coverage as required.
  • Responds to emergencies on campus through meetings, workshops, etc. (during regular office hours and after hours).

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Counsellor you will possess a Masters` degree in counselling, psychology or a related discipline and 1-2 years of directly related experience and practicum; preferably in a University Counselling Service. You will also have current knowledge in the field of psychology gained through study and association with others in the field along with strong assessment skills. Experience with crisis counselling is required.
