What you'll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Department Head, as a member of the faculty team, you are responsible for planning and preparing instructional materials and resources; establishing and managing a positive learning environment; instructing and evaluating students; building and sustaining professional relationships with students, colleagues, community partners, and stakeholders, and support applied research efforts in social science; as well as other related duties.

Specific instructional areas and courses within the program may include: Correctional Operations, Case Management, Youth Corrections, Canadian Criminal Justice System, Research and Report Writing, Applied Writing Skills, Documentation Skills, various computer applications, Counseling Skills, Psychology, Sociology, Deviance, Victimology, Interpersonal Behaviour, Group Dynamics, and Fitness for Life. The successful incumbent will be willing and able to integrate innovative technology and interactive student learning techniques into teaching practices.

Qualifications

Required qualifications for this opportunity include a two-year diploma in a related discipline, with a minimum of five (5) years of recent work experience in the criminal justice field with related experience in corrections or policing; OR a degree in social sciences or kinesiology or related discipline, with a minimum of three (3) years of recent work experience in the criminal justice field with related experience in corrections or policing. Related experience must include delivering fitness programs, knowledge and experience in defense tactics, arrest and control, restraints, ground fighting and knife defense. Successful candidates will be required to provide a criminal background check. Candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet these qualifications on their resumes.

Written and spoken competence in English is required.

Preference may be given to candidates with PARE certification (Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation), experience in PPCT (Pressure Point Control Tactics), SHARP (Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention), COPAT (Corrections Officers' Physical Ability Testing) and PREP (Physical Readiness Evaluation for Policing) and to candidates who have experience teaching in a post-secondary environment.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered as equivalent. Subject to competition response, the minimum qualifications may be raised.

NBCC offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package that includes a competitive salary for this position ranging from $1,973 to $2,780 bi-weekly. Successful candidates may be eligible for a higher maximum step, up to $3,036 bi-weekly, based on their level of post-secondary education. This position is a unionized position where the terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the collective agreement for the College.
