Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth 811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.

Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations delivers a high-quality prehospital care program to Nova Scotians. We achieve this through our 1,400+ employees who work with us, including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communications officers, and support employees.

About the Role:

The Communications Officer serves as the first contact with the caller and, as such, will often be called upon to calm and direct the actions of lay persons pass on pertinent information and provide direction to responding agencies. This person must possess the innate ability to perform several tasks at one time. The Communication Officer reports to the Shift Supervisor or designate. The Communication Officer performs duties as a call-taker and as a dispatcher.

The Communication Officer will take direction from and act in conjunction with the Shift Supervisor, Senior Supervisor, Deputy Director and Director of Field Operations. In a capacity covering a broad range of duties and responsibilities, the mission of the Communications Officer will be to contribute to the overall operational status of the Communication Centre as fully functional while meeting or exceeding customer/ patient expectations during assigned shifts.

The Communications Officer shall communicate company philosophy and policy so as to instill a shared realization of the company's goals to co-workers. The Communications Officer assists with the effective, indirect delivery of patient care, by aggressively following Deployment Plans by following accepted call-taking procedures and protocols, by call-prioritization of medical calls and through the effective delivery of pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions.

Responsibilities

The position entails, but is not limited to the following:

· Maintains high standards for health, safety, welfare and ethical behavior.

· Adheres to all policies of agencies, institutional and regulatory bodies which are approved and/or adopted by the Centre.

· Maintains a positive attitude, be self-motivated and attain a high standard of performance.

· Responsible to fulfill various roles required of the shift and as directed by the Shift Supervisor, including but not limited to:

I. Emergency Call-Taker,

II. Dispatcher,

III. Air Medical and Trauma Communications Officer

IV. First Response Communications Officer

· Responsible to fulfill various housekeeping duties in the Centre.

· Responsible to ensure the timely and accurate completion of required paperwork and reports

· Supports, interprets and complies with the philosophies, policies and SOPs of the Centre.

· Ensures individual compliance with the established System Status Plan.

· Ensures individual compliance with Advanced Medical Priorities Dispatch System.

· Demonstrates basic technical efficiency and knowledge of all Communication Centre equipment.

· Receives and processes requests for emergency and non-emergency medical assistance, using proper telecommunications technique and etiquette.

· Advocates and practices excellent customer service conduct.

· Demonstrate basic ability to appropriately respond to a variety of public inquiry beyond requests for medical assistance.

What you'll need

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

· Excellent communication and interaction skills required.

· Active CPR Certification required.

· Certification as an Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatcher through the International Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch, or other agency dictated by Emergency Health Services Nova Scotia (EHSNS) considered an asset.

· Basic understanding of EHSNS Policy and Procedures and Medical Communications Standard Operating Procedures and policies considered an asset.

· Must have functional working knowledge of computer applications and operating systems.

· Paramedic licensure through the Nova Scotia College of Paramedics is considered an asset

Knowledge & Skills:

· Experience as a Communications Officer within a high-performance Medical Communication Centre,

· Possession of a General Operator's Certificate (radio) considered an asset

· Ability to accurately type 25 words per minute.

· Preference may be given to candidates who are bilingual.
