The Communications Coordinator will help implement NSCAD University's overall communications strategy and support the marketing, recruitment and advancement functions of the University. Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications and working closely with the Chief of Staff, the Communications Coordinator, in collaboration with the University Relations team, will work with the President, the Senior Management Team and other university stakeholders to implement communication strategies, which will broaden the University's impact and reputation.

As the Communications Coordinator, your primary role is being the custodian of NSCAD's communications platforms and channels while assisting in the implementation of the University's marketing strategy.

In fulfilling this role, you will help create communication and media plans, implement communication activities, and track and analyze their performance while ensuring that the overall branding and strategic objectives of the University are met.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the implementation of campus-wide strategic communications planning.
  • Assess communications tactics, report findings and recommend improvements.
  • Keep abreast of issues in the post-secondary education environment, emerging communications trends, and industry best practice.
  • Develop and maintain an effective and up-to-date weekly production calendar for the publishing of editorial content, including web, graphic design, promotional video and audio, posters or banners, notices and event listings.
  • Produce high quality strategic content by working with freelance writers and NSCAD staff to ensure that content is delivered on deadline for publication/posting.
  • Write, research, edit, and publish news releases, articles, editorials, digital content (including website and social media) and print publications to promote the University in Canada and abroad.
  • Promote and encourage effective internal and external communications practices at all levels of the institution.
  • Produce NSCAD's Annual Report and other communications aimed at internal stakeholders, Government stakeholders, the arts and education communities, and the general public both in Nova Scotia and internationally.
  • Report on media measurement statistics in conjunction with external media monitoring services.
  • Regularly monitor media coverage to allow the University to be proactive in its response.
  • Take part in the planning, coordination and execution of news conferences and other media events.
  • Responsible for executing crisis communications updates & activity for the University.

What you'll need

Qualifications

Education:

Degree in communications, marketing, public relations or a related discipline and at least two years' relevant and related professional experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated success and experience using relevant communications platforms and channels to achieve desired strategic objectives.
  • Highly-developed project management skills and the capacity to manage competing priorities, maintain attention to detail and to meet deadlines.
  • Experience in developing and executing integrated brand and product marketing communications campaigns across a broad range of media channels.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships within a post-secondary educational community.
  • Significant experience using social and digital media to reach and engage target audiences.
  • High level oral and written communication, interpersonal, negotiation, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated experience editing copy written by others to ensure a publication, print or online, is of a standard that meets editorial requirements and strategic objectives.
  • Knowledge of multimedia production norms and best practices
  • Experience with websites and web content management systems, graphic and digital image software and sound knowledge in the use of standard office software packages.
  • Capacity to work independently or in teams to meet demanding timeframes and expectations.
  • Ability to work outside normal work hours, on nights and weekends on occasion (particularly during busy events periods).
