Position: Collections Officer (One Year Contract)

Department: Service Centre, Enrolment Services

Annual Salary: $47,000 - $54,000 + 4% in lieu of vacation

Under the direction of the Associate Registrar, Student Finances, the Collections Officer will identify and communicate via email, phone and in-person with students at risk of non-payment; contact, monitor, and collect on outstanding accounts; manage and follow up on student payment arrangements; and maintain accurate financial and demographic records and reconcile records between the university and collection agencies.

Responsibilities

Duties as the Collection Officer include, but are not limited to:

  • Contacting past and current students and collecting overdue accounts.
  • Planning phone campaigns and working with front counter staff.
  • Communicating collection processes and the impact of non-payment to students.
  • Meeting with students, in-person and over the phone/email to make payment arrangements.
  • Maintaining, monitoring and following up on payment promises and arrangements.Liaising with Collection Services of Nova Scotia and Collection Agencies regarding the 1st and 2nd placement of accounts.
  • Identifying groups of students at risk of non-payment.
  • Maintaining accurate, comprehensive records and reconciliations of assigned accounts.
  • Maintaining accurate records for student contact information and ensuring agencies are updated as needed.
  • Working with International Student Services to understand the full impact on registration, transcript and letter denial decisions.
  • Processing transcript denials and working with involved parties to resolve balances along with making decisions on exceptions.
  • Enforcing the University's credit practices.

What you'll need

Qualifications

To be the successful Collections Officer you will possess an undergraduate degree (business/commerce preferred) with at least two (2) years of direct experience or a minimum of five (5) years of direct experience. You demonstrate excellent communication skills, both oral and written; strong analytical skills with proven problem solving ability; and knowledge of University's policies, practices and terminologies. Knowledge of Canadian student loan programs; knowledge of financial or student counselling; and experience working in the Banner information system will be considered assets.
