About Our Opportunity

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Janitor is responsible for maintaining a high level of cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in their assigned building(s) under the jurisdiction of the Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency (NSPHA). Furthermore, the Janitor provides a sense of security and offers assistance to the tenants.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Clean vacant units when requested, including garbage and refuse removal and washing walls.
  • Performs inspections throughout the entire building to determine the cleanliness and security of the building.
  • Maintains cleanliness of front entrances, public areas, and common areas, ensuring that interior and exterior spaces are safe and clean.
  • Clean appliances in laundry rooms, including removing lint from dryers.
  • Clean interior/exterior elevator doors, tracks, and sweep or wash floors of elevators.
  • Prepare garbage and refuse for removal from properties and vacated premises, sweep and wash down stairwells and stair railings, clean appliances, buff and wax all flooring as required and directed, and clean elevators.
  • Keep the janitor room clean and clear of any garbage or fire hazards.
  • Complete work orders and material requisitions as required, and report maintenance requirements and any unusual activity to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.

What you'll need

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or high school equivalent, plus two years' related experience.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully with candidates, understand and operate cleaning equipment, and proper cleaning chemical handling knowledge.
  • Ability to work independently and corporately with others, and complete daily tasks according to a work schedule.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, sound judgement and initiative when investigating, questioning, and dealing with inquiries, requests and submission that are sensitive and confidential in nature.
  • Perform all tasks in a safe manner in accordance with NSPHA's safety standards and policies.

Assets

  • Possess current Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety.
