Casual Tutor Positions for 2021-2022 Academic year

Salary Range: $18.00 to $25.00 hourly, up to 13.5 hours/week


For the 2021-22 Academic Year, based on public health guidelines, NSCC plans to return to more in-person learning, supports and services. You may be required to work on campus, remotely or a combination of both as the Academic Year begins and progresses. This will be clarified further upon hire.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Student Services and under the functional guidance and support of the Student Services Advisor, Indigenous Supports, you will be responsible for supporting the academic development of Indigenous students. Through regular one-on-one meetings with students, tutors will help NSCC students improve their skill and understanding in a particular subject, while building their study skills.

General Duties

Tutors will support a student's learning which can include:

  • delivery and support of study and test preparation sessions
  • subject specific review sessions

Specific Responsibilities

  • Conduct one-on-one tutoring sessions with students in identified academic area(s).
  • Facilitate test and exam study sessions.
  • Participate in scheduled tutor training in learning strategies, presentation and public speaking, and working with adult students.
  • Promote available NSCC academic and learning resources and support students in their usage.
  • Make referrals to appropriate Student and Career Services team members or resources as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • You possess a university degree, college diploma or are currently enrolled in post-secondary education.
  • Recent tutoring experience, preferably with adults, would be considered an asset.
  • Academic proficiency in one or more academic subjects.
  • An understanding and/or willingness to learn about Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and barriers Indigenous students face in the community college setting.
  • You are a positive, enthusiastic, team player.
  • You possess excellent communication skills.
  • You have experience using computer applications such as Microsoft Office 365 (especially Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams), and video conferencing (including live chat).
  • Experience or an interest in learning and tutoring. This might be demonstrated by working with students in tutoring or any other related leadership roles.
  • Good judgment, including analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Initiative, and ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Flexibility in performance of duties and ability to adjust schedule with limited notice.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, diplomacy and confidentiality.
  • You must be willing to participate in training sessions, as well as be able to work evenings, lunch hours and weekends.

This position is required to work in person, remotely, or a combination of both. Access to a computer with Internet access is required (if you are able to tutor virtually).
