Successful candidates are expected to lead an innovative, impactful program of research with international reach. We seek a candidate who integrates transdisciplinary, collaborative research in the following areas in relation to Transatlantic Black Diasporic art (analysis, research, and/or making):

• Visual and material culture and/or art practice;
• Resistance and resilience;
• Activism and critiques of anti-Blackness; historic and/or contemporary Black lived experiences and histories;
• Anti‐racist, anti-oppression, Critical Race Studies and/ or Black feminism;
• Curatorial practice and museum representation;
• Performance and or visual culture pedagogies;
• Aesthetics;
• Community consultation and activation;
• African Nova Scotian community collaboration and engagement.

NSCAD's research is driven by the goal to be a leader in four distinct areas: Visual and Cultural Literacies, Sustainability and Adaptability, Material Exploration, and Art/Design Education and Pedagogy with reimagined Infrastructure underpinning those themes. We commit to supporting research centres, institutes, networks, and clusters, including those well-established, emerging, or proposed, to support interdisciplinary collaboration.

This Canada Research Chair Tier 2 is broadly interdisciplinary, welcoming the opportunity for interdisciplinary research throughout the school and through interdisciplinary practices beyond the arts.

We seek an accomplished colleague who will join us in this journey of respectful engagement in developing research directly relevant to and in relationship with communities, and in leading the university in exciting new directions in relation to arts practice and scholarship.

Through an outstanding, ongoing program of research and graduate training, the Chair will contribute to NSCAD's Academic Plan 2020-2025: Opportunity and Belonging.

The successful candidate will:

• Have a strong research agenda with excellent productivity and leveraged funds from external research agencies.
• Have an active, original, innovative program of high quality, research and a vision for its future directions.
• Have research that is responsive to and respectful of the needs of communities and students.
• Contribute positively to the respectful and inclusive culture at NSCAD University
• Demonstrate excellence in teaching and graduate supervision.

Consistent with Tier 2 CRC criteria, the selection committee will evaluate candidates based on their: 1) potential as leaders in their fields; 2) original, innovative proposed research program of the highest quality; 3) record of attracting and supervising graduate students and mentoring scholars; and 4) track record related to increasing diversity in their previous institutional environment, and in curriculum.

Additional information
Faculty and Librarians at the NSCAD are governed by the provisions of the Collective Agreement (FUNSCAD Unit 1). The successful applicant will be nominated by NSCAD University for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair and, upon approval of the Chair by the CRC Secretariat will then be offered an appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate at the University (term and rank will be determined as per the evaluation policy). The anticipated start date for this position is Fall 2024. Please note this is a 5 year limited term appointment.

At the time of nomination, candidates for Tier II chair positions must be outstanding young scholars who have received their highest degree within the previous ten years. Potential Tier II candidates who are more than ten years removed from their highest degree but who have experienced career interruptions may still be eligible for nomination as a CRC and are encouraged to submit a description of such interruptions using the Tier II Justification Assessment Form (to be sent to NSCAD University with the application materials). Please refer to the Canada Research Chairs website for the application form and additional information on eligibility criteria, acceptable justifications for the extension of the eligibility period, and other CRC program-related details. Independent of the submission of the formal justification form, candidates are encouraged to include in their cover letter any career interruptions or personal circumstances that may have had an impact on their career goals (such as the decision to have a family, eldercare, illness, etc.). In the assessment procedure, these factors will be carefully considered.
