Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth 811 Mental Health and Addictions for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.

EMC delivers a high-quality pre-hospital care program and Telehealth service to Nova Scotians each and every day. We achieve this through the more than 1,400 employees who work with us including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communication officers and support staff.

What you'll do

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Supervisor of Finance, the Billing Assistant administratively supports the Billing Department and provides back up to reception.

Responsible to assist with the day-today preparation of patient ambulance bills, per the Ambulance Fee Regulations set by the province of Nova Scotia, the Billing Assistant will conduct discussions with patients regarding their bills to ensure ambulance transports are billed in accordance with the Ambulance Fee Regulations. The Billing Assistant will follow up on inquiries, prepare invoice adjustments and determine appropriate billing rates, process payments and complete all functions related to patient accounts.

What You Offer:

Skillfully handle patient inquiries, interpreting ePCR documentation, clarifying patient information using the MSI database, accessing the CAD to clarify. Determine what help the person on the phone needs, overcoming any potential communication barriers.

The Billing Assistant will make decisions on appropriate billing but with assistance from the Billing and Cash Administrators, appropriate posting to patient accounts, discussions with patients in regards to billing and what needs to be done to correctly bill ambulance transports according to the Regulations.

If the billing does not clearly fit the Regulations and guidelines they would discuss situation with Supervisor. If there was a difficult patient this would be forwarded to Supervisor. If there are situations where the patient account seems unclear, it would be discussed with Supervisor.

Enabling the Billing and Cash Administrators to focus on the tasks that are focused where there may be financial impact.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Education:

Education / Experience

· Completion of High School (diploma)

· Business degree or diploma from a post-secondary institution preferred

· From one year to less than two years' experience in an office environment.

Knowledge & Skills:

o Working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office.

o Ability to learn quickly and effectively use various computer billing and reporting systems.

o Data entry and billing/accounting experience, preferred.

o Effective oral and written communications.

o Demonstrated conflict resolution skills: balances assertiveness and sensitivity

o High level of professionalism

o Practices good time management.

o Possesses interpersonal skills in dealing with individuals and teams.

o Proven and effective customer service telephone skills.

o Strong analytical and organizational skills

o Ability to maintain confidential records and information.
