Job Information and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the BCOM Senior Academic Advisor, the BCOM Academic Advisor:

  • Works with the staff of BCOM Academic Success and Advising Centre to ensure a welcoming and supportive environment for all students.
  • Provides academic advising to BCOM students; assists students with course selection to ensure program requirements are met; assists students with the sequencing of courses to meet their needs.
  • Creates and maintains accurate student advising records using appropriate student systems.
  • Works closely with students participating in the Back in Business Academic Success program; works with students to develop individualized success strategies with regular check ins and monitors students' progress closely.
  • Organizes and facilitates group advising sessions for targeted student groups (specific majors, at-risk students, Dean's list, varsity athletics, etc.)
  • Works with the Sobey School of Business Communications Office, Career Services, Enrolment Services, Student Affairs and Services and other student support offices around campus to coordinate activities and raise the profile of the BCOM Advising Centre.
  • Supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of BCOM advising processes and information a management to ensure efficient, holistic, student-centric operations.
  • Maintains the BCOM Academic Success and Advising Centre Brightspace Information page to ensure proper information is available to students through this platform.
  • Collects and analyses data relevant to BCOM students and graduates as required by the Program Manager, Associate Dean (Academic), BCOM Program Coordinator and the Dean, including retention reports, probation reports and other statistics.

Experience and Education Requirements

To be the successful BCOM Academic Advisor you will have:

  • An Undergraduate degree.
  • Minimum three to five years related professional experience in a helping profession.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and facilitating programs.
  • Proven experience building relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Professional judgment and discretion.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in using common office, desktop publishing and communication software (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience with Ellucian CRM Advise and Banner considered an asset.
