NSCAD University invites applications for a tenure track position in Textiles - Dye and Print, at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek a candidate with an active studio practice who will help shape the future of Craft, artistic research, and pedagogy within the vibrant environment of Atlantic Canada's only dedicated art university.

We seek a candidate in the area of Dye and Print who will help shape the future of artistic research and pedagogy at NSCAD. The successful candidate will be a maker and an artist with an active practice, who is engaged in key conversations in contemporary fiber art and textile design, and who demonstrates aptitude for involving students in those conversations. We encourage applications from outstanding studio-based researchers who work in art-based methodologies and sustainable practices who have demonstrated commitment to equity and decolonization in their work, teaching and research.

The successful candidate will have the capacity to teach natural and chemical dyeing, resist dyeing, screenprinting, repeat printing, and digital printing; and will combine strong technical skills with intellectual breadth and dynamic pedagogy. We seek an engaged and committed colleague who will thrive in our teaching and learning community. The candidate will hold knowledge and expertise in the specialism of dye and print, intersecting with one of the following practices:

  • Sustainable textile methodologies
  • Community engagement and participatory practices
  • Textile material futures
  • Production craft and entrepreneurship
  • Colour theory and practice
  • Digital methodologies

What you'll do

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a national profile as an artist and researcher relevant to the Craft Division.
  • Work with all levels of undergraduates and MFA students.
  • Have principal teaching duties in Craft-Textiles/Fashion, with possible duties in other program areas, depending on expertise. Potential courses to be taught, but not limited to:
    • TEXL 2100 Intro Resist Dye
    • TEXL 2200 Intro Screenprinting
    • TEXL 3100 Intermediate Dye and Print
    • TEXL 3506-4506 Studio Projects: Textiles
  • Support the full expression of NSCAD students' identities through diverse, inclusive, and equitable pedagogies.
  • Provide service to the program, Faculty, and University-wide governance systems.
  • Contribute to building a stimulating university culture and an excellent student experience.

What you'll need

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • An MFA or equivalent in a relevant field; exceptions may be considered based upon outstanding career achievement.
  • An active studio practice and record of peer-reviewed exhibitions/funding.
  • An original, and innovative plan of high-quality research creation and a vision for its future directions.
  • Demonstrated capacity to teach at the post-secondary level and aptitude for successful curriculum development and delivery.
  • Familiarity with the diverse range of current issues in contemporary material arts and design and post-secondary education.
  • A proven record of promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.

Applicants are welcome to highlight aspects of their creative practice that connect to various fields and/or knowledge systems. They may also highlight experience supervising graduate students.
