About Our Opportunity

Under the direction of the Applications Supervisor, the Applications Officer is responsible for the provision of information to the general public concerning eligibility of applicants, verifying application information, assessing housing applications, preparing reports recommending the approval or denial of applications, and assigning applicants to units. The incumbent is also responsible for processing all transfer requests from existing applicants and identifying potential applicants where possible vacancy loss exists.

What you'll need

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a Business Administration or Secretarial diploma program, plus four years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Sound analytical skills, judgment and discretion are required to respond to inquiries, to prioritize work to meet month end, year-end, and other transaction/reporting deadlines.
  • Strong keyboarding skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office, with intermediate to excellent skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent knowledge of office procedures and practices are required to maintain accurate and secure files, track and follow-up information/report requests and manage petty cash.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Good knowledge of Housing Authority policies, procedures and practices is required to respond accurately to inquiries from internal or external sources, applicants, and tenants.
  • Client service oriented.
  • Communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Interpersonal skills to deal with co-workers, tenants, other departments, and the public in a positive, tactful, courteous, and cooperative manner.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision, as well as in a team environment.
  • Works cooperatively with others and displays a positive attitude to further the goals of the organization.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, sound judgment and initiative when investigating, questioning, and dealing with inquires requests and submissions that are sensitive and confidential in nature.
  • Adaptable to change as the job requires and is receptive to new ideas and willing to try new methods and approaches; and
  • Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.

Assets:

  • Working knowledge of Yardi Property Management and Rent CafĂ©, and ICM (Integrated Case Management) software is an asset.

Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency (NSPHA) is the provincial government agency responsible for the administration and delivery of affordable housing solutions for low-income Nova Scotians.

We accomplish this by working closely with other levels of government as well as private and community partners.

Across its districts, NSPHA provides more than 11,200 safe, affordable homes as part of its Housing Services to seniors and families. District offices manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia's housing stock. Their responsibilities include administering tenant applications and placements, collecting rent, resolving tenant issues, and maintaining and repairing properties.
